We finally have the money to do some remodeling in our galley kitchen. Two windows face west, so I want curtains, shades, blinds...something on those windows, plus I like privacy. What is trending or current?

I had a galley kitchen in the other house and I used a valance on each of the windows. It's nice because they make them in various lengths. (I always preferred the longer version).

My friend has a galley kitchen and she prefers blinds or shutters. I had those in another house and they were a pain to keep clean and free of dust.

If you have a large windowsill and garden, plants are nice in a window.

I've seen bamboo shades in a variety of sizes. That might be an option.

Decide what you like and go with that choice.

Do you like shutters? We have them thru our house. They are helpful for blocking hot Summer sun and easy to close when you want privacy.

I have a small kitchen with one window. I purchased decorator fabric and a heavy duty spring rod....I measured the width of the area between the cupboards where the window is, added extra for hemming and then determined what length I wanted and hemmed all edges.

I sewed a rod pocket for the spring rod and then gathered up the fabric and tied a cord about 3-4" from both ends...the result is a swag in the center. You might have to fuss with it a bit to get the look you want.

Since the fabric is decorator fabric it lays nicely. Behind the 'curtain' I have a blind...I get the sun in the afternoon.

You could also do a bottom up, top down blind for privacy. I don't need privacy at the window as it over looks our back yard that is fenced in.

My kitchen has a west facing window. I replaced my wood blind because it was too heavy and too hard to keep clean. I replaced it with a simple Levelor vinyl mini blind (Home Depot) that does not have the usual cords to raise/lower the blinds. That's done by easily moving the blinds up/down at the base of the blind. I love them - they're so easy to use and have a clean look because there are no cords. Blinds are an absolute must-have with my west window in the afternoon. Curtains would never work on their own.

BTW - my kitchen is small, so I needed to keep the window covering simple and to a minimum.

We put solar screens on the outside of our west facing windows. We have double cell blinds from Smith and Noble online. They have a lot of different options and are easy to install if you are handy or have a handy spouse or contractor. What I love about our double cell blinds is the sun is beautifully filtered when they are down. My kitchen sink has a west facing window and the sun can make it hard to see (hurts my eyes) unless I pull down the cell blind and thank goodness we have the solar screens on the outside. We've lived in other houses where we used darker colors in the cellular blinds but this house we put in a light tan. We don't like slatted blinds, they break easy if you are pulling them up and down alot to open the windows. I don't like shutters because I have a lot of plants and shutters block the light but my husband loves them. He has a nice shutter in his office but the rest of the house is double cellular blinds, my bedroom is triple cellular blinds. They kept our house a lot warmer in the deep freeze we had with no power.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I am going to begin the hunt for new blinds or shades. Funny thing...I was discussing the kitchen window treatments with my DIL and son last night. They said, "Mom, the problem isn't the kitchen, it's the living room!" Perhaps I need a whole house refresh. 😲

I choose just a lacy valance on the window over my kitchen sink (the only window in my kitchen). Anything else is hard to keep clean, makes the space feel closed in and dark.

My kitchen window faces the back yard, and a deep woods, so privacy isn't really a big issue at that window.
