Removing Parts of Walls

I really like the looks of this space after partially removing the wall. It really opens the space, but still keeps the area separated. Love the floor! I like the mirror & the dark table/cabinet on the right, but not loving the rest of the furnishings.

Yes, huge difference.

Lightening the walls makes it look larger, too.

@wilma Don't like any of the decor but the basic room itself is a huge improvement.

This is gorgeous. The new configuration allows light, sight and air to flow between the rooms without them becoming one, big, awkward space. I feel the furniture arrangement, artwork, and proportions are all in perfect harmony. And I personally relish the light/dark contrast. I wouldn't touch a thing.

While the room does look better opened up, the rest of it, furnishings and decor are not appealing and take away from the room in my opinion. Aside from opening the room up, it needs a make over in other ways.

On the face of it and despite the bland decor, opening up is an improvement, based on what we can see. That said, there are often advantages to doors that can actually be opened and closed.

Mirrors should not be used as decor unless they reflect something interesting or beautiful. A reflection of the ceiling and light fixture is neither. Even the mirror irself is of no interest.

Agree totally with @Kachina624 ....the mirror as placed is wasted. I wouldn't want to look at the fixture.

BIG question: Is that a bed by cocktail table ?

I think this decorator was trying to combine traditional touches with contemporary and it's not working well.

Removing part of the walls really opened up the space, but so did the change in wall color. Light walls make an area look larger and bounce light.

Not a fan of the low bench in front of the fireplace.

An empty fireplace out of season gives room for a pretty plant or flowers.

Big improvement for sure. The furniture and decor is not what I would have chosen but I think it is OK for the space..... if you don't need a comfortable place to sit.

@jlkz @Kachina624 I looks to me like a very contemporary chaise that has been badly placed. To me, it might be better along one of the long walls, perhaps under the large picture.

Are you referring to the white piece? Guessing it's a chaise, but I'm not liking the style of it or it being placed there.

Big improvement. Although I don't love all the furniture in the new space, there are some interesting pieces there.

That door placement in the before picture is very strange.
