Thinking of putting in French doors between my hallway and opening into the den.

For those familiar with French doors.........do they swing open freely when the knob is turned or does one have to be stationary with a type of peg on the top and bottom?

With the second type you would have to manually unhook both the bottom and top to open that door. This type would then require a hook or catch to be put in the floor which I'm not sure I want t o do.

Any thoughts appreciated : )

Thanks!

We had a set at our old home, the one remained stationary with a peg that went up into the wooden frame of the door. Nothing was in the floor at all on ours. It was nice to be able to open one door or both with just a flick of the peg.

i LOVE French doors. They can be so dramatic. They add panache to any room. I built my home many years ago but if I were younger and building a home, I'd definitely find a place for French doors.

We had french doors in our master bedroom. The one door open freely as would any door when opened and closed. The other would stay shut until you manually unlocked the top and bottom. On either side of french doors were smaller door that had built in screens to let the fresh air in. Which I appreciated because there was only one window in master. We purchased the house with french doors already there. I know by seeing the style home in my area that there were windows there so it must have been a lot of work to get those installed. We looked into replacing them with a more updated and better material french door about 10 years ago and it was over $12,000.

I have a set of French doors between rooms. One door opens freely and the other has some sort of friction plate on top edge that holds it closed. Just a firm push opens it. Neither door has a lock or contact with floor. The free-moving door latches with the firm door and you turn handle to open as normal.

While interior French doors add a nice decorator touch, living with them could be troublesome.

We have a set going into the second floor master suite at our mountain place. The one door is always closed ( lost opportunity for a wall decor item or sconce ).

It becomes an issue should a wheelchair be temporarily or permanently needed ( think aging in place ). It could become an obstacle at resale time.

Just something to consider before making an investment...

When we had our house built 10 years ago, I had two sets of French doors put in, and it was one of the best things we did in this house. I had always loved the look (and also practicality of shutting off the rooms if desired), but I had never had any before.

I think they add so much to the look of the rooms. I think our floor plan would be so much more ordinary without them.

They latch at the top of the door, no latches in the floor.

Get them, you will not be sorry.

@Still Raining

You can have them either way.

We have two sets, the one between the living and dining room opens with both doors. We did have a sliding latch put in across the center of them because our Labs would Bump the doors open and go in and nap on the living room furniture.

The other pair a between our bedroom and our BR sitting area. On those we had separate sliding latches put on

the top of each one.

I love them as they add light. Two things, they are not very good at noise reduction, it’s just us, so no big deal. Also if you have dogs, there WILL be nose prints!

Enjoy.
