Vinegar...Consumer Report

FYI - report via ABC network........caution about using vinegar as a cleaning product.

I've always avoid vinegar for scrubbing..... if vinegar can make great pickles - best to use something else.

Per report - "V" can cause pits in various materials, especially in kitchen cleaning, and cause rubber gaskets to deteriorate.

When you have hard water, vinegar works great for stains on faucets. It's worth the risk.

@fthunt Thank you. Good to know. I do use it on certain things, but not full strength. And I do use white vinegar mixed with baking soda for the occasional burnt stuff at the bottom of a stainless steel pan.

I use distilled white vinegar as a toilet bowl cleaner- it works great!

I've used white vinegar and water for 2 decades now in my kitchen especially and on my laminate PergoXP floors. Zero problems.

I've been using it (some what diluted ) on my car windows. Windex did not clean the glass completely.

I now want to remember to be especially careful near any rubber i.e. widow wipers.

Vinegar mixed with baking soad certainly cleans my white stove top around all the burners too. Never use anything else to keep it clean and it takes only a few minutes too.

Yes, i used vinegar in our home we had built,in 2000, no longer live there, but moped my tile floors,tiled shower, it did damage both.

I do believe this article and recently read this the reason not to use as a dishwasher cleaner because hard on rubber parts - hard for me to hear since I believed it helped with calcium buildup. I noted on list of cleaners that I can usr on my Cambria countertop is a 50\50 vinegar\water mixture.

I feel good about vinegar but need to watch how much and where.

I was told by the man who repaired our dishwasher to run bleach thru an empty dishwasher to clean it.

I wonder if that is ok to use (if it is), than vinegar which is much less harsh, wouldn't be ok to use.

I appreciate it when posters take time to share useful info and tips.😊

I read the article a few days ago after seeing it listed in my email news from Consumer Reports.

I keep vinegar on hand for a myriad of uses, and that won't change but I found the article enlightening... it's not "anti-vinegar" it's just a simple heads up about a few precautions in very specific cases.

"...You may have heard that running a dishwasher with a bowl of vinegar in it will help get rid of hard-water film and lingering odors. Some people even use vinegar as a rinse aid.

CR’s testers have tried it out in our dishwasher lab to see if vinegar could remove water film.

“It didn’t do a thing,” says Larry Ciufo, head of the dishwasher lab at CR. “It was perhaps better than nothing back in the day, but there are specially formulated dishwasher cleaners today that work really well.”

My Orthodontist said I could use a 50/50 vinegar to water solution to soak my retainer in to clean it.

It seems to me that using vinegar diluted and not frequently it would be ok since you can use it diluted to flush out our lady parts.

Thank you for that info. I have two year old Bosch and I don't want to mess it up. I have tried one Finish cleaner and who knows how well it does since its pretty much interior stuff and thus up to faith! And that cleaner was over 4$.
