I Found a Treasure Trove While Decluttering!!!!

While decluttering my spare "junk" room this weekend, I discovered an entire box of VHS tapes that contain the "old" HGTV decorating and craft shows that we all miss so much. Luckily, I still have a VHS player and I have been enjoying: Decorating Cents, Home Matters, Carol Duval, Home, Tipical Mary Ellen. It is so enjoyable to watch these original HGTV shows that we all loved so much.

I wish they would return to this type of programming. I hardly ever watch HGTV anymore because I am so tired of the real estate shows that are the same thing over and over, the same "open concept", the frenzied make overs of the landscape, etc. The pace of these old shows is so much more relaxed and enjoyable and they give us ideas that don't break the bank. I hope I come across some of the old Kitty Barthalomew decorating shows. I always loved her. I'm sure that alot of people don't know what they have missed with the older shows. They think that HGTV has always been like it is now.

They were the best. And Room by Room and Kitty Bartholomew! I loved those craft shows on stenciling and making little things and just how to do so many things. Now it's just 'the real estate channel.'

Oh, I loved those days on HGTV! Those real design shows encouraged creativity and (in many cases) affordable design and solutions. Now they concentrate on knock-down-walls-and-gut-the-whole-place renovations, real estate wars, and tiresome contests. I watch only occasionally. I don't know what happened to the old concepts, but I sure do miss those enjoyable shows.

I used to love to watch Decorating Cents, Trading Spaces, Trash to Treasure, and all the other 30-minutes shows that gave all kinds of great ideas (and some crazy ones)-also Room by Room and Kitty Bartholomew--haven't thought of those in ages, but I do have a LOT of these shows on old VHS tapes in a box. I still have great intentions of skimming through them and putting anything of interest on a DVD...but when do I get the time?

Like you, marky, I watched HGTV a lot in those days and almost never turn it on any more. They really have nothing that interests me that much...can't remember when I last watched it.

I also have tapes of the old Donna Dewberry and Bob Ross painting shows from our local PBS network - bought the painting kits and everything, and there they sit. The paints have probably dried up - but somehow life just got in the way.....

Wow! What luck! I wish I had some of the old HGTV shows to watch. I loved that channel when there were craft shows and real decorating shows on it. These days, HGTV isn't on my watch list at all. I was lucky enough to buy a Christmas set of shows on DVD, but I would love to have some of the classic Decorating Cents episodes with Joan Steffend and Room Service with Sarah Richardson.

I sorely miss the old programming format of HGTV. I am so tired of the real-estate shows that I rarely watch HGTV anymore. Even the DiY Network has change it programming to pretty much useless shows, and they are supposed be showing how to do it yourself.

I loved ""Homes Across America"" where either 2 or 3 gorgeous homes were showcased room by room. Beautiful and so enjoyable.

I miss the shows with Lisa Laporter (sp??) and Clyde. Loved to watch them and loved her suggestions, which were always affordable and interesting.

Lucky you! I used to watch all those shows too. And for the past few days I had been trying to think of the name of Joan Steffend's show because she is now doing a commercial for an awning company. I wasn't really paying attention to it 'til I realized I recognized the voice - so glad I now know the name again! I also enjoyed Decorating for the Sexes with Michael Payne. He's the one who brought Lisa LaPorta to HGTV, she was his assistant.

Carol Duvall was so much fun - she was so good at demonstrating crafts in a real way and I always enjoyed the segment where she would show crafts made by viewers. And her Christmas show was the best!

Like others here, I rarely watch HGTV anymore unless House Hunter Int'l is in a place that interests me. It's all about buying and remodeling homes, an experience I will never have. Decorating and crafting, yes, buying and remodeling for hundreds of thousands of dollars, no, so how many times can I watch that?

Must be fun to watch the old tapes with all the old commercials, like a time capsule. Hey, why don't you put them on DVD and sell them to us?

Thanks for the reminder of how great those shows were!!! I learned a lot of neat design techniques, especially from Candace and the lovely woman from Canada---maybe it was Home Matters.
