Soft and Neutral

I really like this room but there is an elephant in this room I would change. What are your thoughts?

@jubilant I'd ditch the bookcase at warp speed. It's too big (elephant is right) and dominates the room. I also don't like the "busy" coffee table base.

beautiful BUT blairing on ur eyes--so bright--I think it needs2b toned down--tooo much of a good thing is not always a good thing!--maybe some more greenery & some sort of pop of color----maybe wth a throw blanket on the couch etc etcbut enjoy bc it really is beautiful---------marynj

Is that a loveseat across from the couch? I would get rid of that, do not like the colors in it for this room, and I would either get a new coffee table, or at least get a different base, do not like how it looks. Bookshelf does look a bit big, maybe a smaller one would be better!

The whole room is coming off a little bland for me. However, the coffee table base and that tie-dye or batik type print chair across from the sofa are the two things I'd change out first.

I'm usually a big fan of neutrals, but I'm not feeling this one. I think it's the furniture style.

The room might work if done in jewel or bright tones, but just purchasing everything in neutrals does not a neutral room make.

I am usually a fan of neutral furnishings, but this room is not pulling me in. I find the furniture to be a bit too traditional and those big mauve lamps have got to go.😄

Something with a pop of color on the wall would balance out that bookcase a bit. It would give your eyes something else to focus on.

@jubilant, I love it when people post good examples of a specific decorating style, especially a type that doesn't appear here often. I think that room is a pretty classic example of "glam" style-- the soft shimmer, the luxe materials, the femininity, the gentle palette with gleaming metallics thrown in...

It isn't my particular style, but for some reason, I love to see it in other rooms! Must be because it reminds me of swank 'old Hollywood'-- and does have elements of the related "Hollywood Regency" decorating style.

I agree that the book case might be a bit overbearing in this context-- if it were smaller, and there were a second one providing symmetry, it would be more effective, I believe.

Altogether interesting, and a nice departure for this "Home" forum.

I like the way the patterns in the room coordinate with each other. I like the pinky/rose colors and the way they used this color. I also think the lighting really fits the room as do the draperies. To me the elephant in the room was the tall green plant squished into the corner but stands out like a sore thumb. I like that they chose a neutral sofa instead of white or cream. I would have chosen a different shelf. I even like the rug!

I don't care for the mismatched end tables and coffee table. I also think the patterned couch and chair don't look good together either.

Thanks, @Oznell , I was looking for something a little different. I saw this and thought it "fit the bill". Glad you enjoyed the change. While this is also not my style, I thought it was well done for what it is.

The room needs some color and warmth. I would replace the chairs, lamps, coffee table and while I do like the book case, it is too much for the room. In general I see many needed changes.

I don't care for this at all. There is no flow to this room.

I don't like the mismatched furniture or the bookcase.

It's a pretty room and window. I don't mind the bookcase at all..it's the rest of the furniture that I really don't like. It looks very dated to me. I would remove the furniture and decor..keep the bookcase and drapes and refurnish.

So I'll take a try at this!

I love neutrals. Just adore the softness and sereneness of it. However, this room doesn't come together for me. I don't know what the one elephant in the room is! But I feel like what's missing is that there is no real anchor to the room. Nothing is grounding it. I'm not sure I like all the "neutral" choices. Not enough contrast in the neutral choices. I'd eliminate some of the patterns and substitute with something else. I'd remove that gold thing from the wall. Also, I think I would rework the placement of the furniture. Obviously, I can't see the whole room, but from what I see, the feng shui - energy flow of the room is wrong. I don't think the large sofa should have it's back to the opening in the wall to the kitchen. I think I might place that to the side facing the sliding glass doors. Or maybe it would go better to the opposite side that it is now (not sure what that part of the room looks like) Then just move everything around to fit. I might substitute the coffee table and/or maybe the throw rug. they don't go together imo!
