The Great Room

Always a lively debate: open floor plan vs "rooms." Chances are if you love a great room you are an open floor plan person. (This would be me-- even before they were a "thing.")

For those who don't know, generally a great room consists of a kitchen, dining area and casual living area of some sort, all open to each other.

Wow! I like them all. #12 is a little too modern for me, but the rest.......! They look like large homes.

I like the great room concept, but also like specific rooms. I suppose the best case for me would be to have both an informal space used most of the time with a more formal 'sitting' space used less often. One interesting disconnect with me is that while I like some airy lofty 'industrial' and loft spaces, I absolutely do not like double height rooms in houses. Occasionally you see one done extremely well, but overall they seem to lack warmth and are cavernous.

Number 4 is very much like our home. We added an addition in 2001.

Do not care for dead animals hanging around a home.

I actually like both, I like Open Concept to a point and I also like separate rooms as well. It depends on the house and the design for me.

The view from the windows would be an important factor for me with a great room. If having separate designated rooms required having spaces without the view of those trees and mountains (as in #2) then I would want a great room. Otherwise, for normal city/suburban views I prefer a house where every room is a room of its own.

While I like big rooms, I do not like open floor plan. My eye does not know what to look at first, sofas, chair, stoves etc. Appliances, no matter how upscale, are not attractive to me. I would rather they have their own room. I do not mind a living space/ dining space in an open area.

Love all of these...each for different reasons!

We built a contemporary style home in the mid-eighties...the living room is three steps down from the rest of the house. The dining room was open to the living room, separated by a half-wall of bookshelves. About 7 years ago, we removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room--best decision ever! It gave my house a much more open, updated feel. We put in a small island between the kitchen and DR, so there's still a bit of separation. And that island has a niche on kitchen side for the microwave.

These rooms are stunning. I have a great room floor plan. The cons are the refrigerator is too loud! And if I burn anything in a skillet or pot you can't escape it. The pros are I like the way it looks and I would do this floor plan again.

Oh, I like the expansive feeling in ALL of them!

Even though I do still like having at least some closed-off rooms as well, the open feeling of a great room is very warming and pleasant to me....

I like the architecture of all of them but the decor of none of them.

Most of the rooms are too formal and stuffy for me. I think an open great room should be more casual. And too many are shades of browns, beiges and greys. Boring and dull.
