Dining Room Table Shape

We are considering purchasing a new dining room table. Our current table is outdated and oversized for us. Do you decorating divas have a preference for a table shape? Our room can accommodate pretty much any size or shape and our style is transitional/traditional. We have an antique corner cupboard and hutch that we plan to keep. Thanks so much!

Most of the time I keep my table round for the 2 of us, but I also have a leaf we put in for when the family comes over for dinner. I have a use for both ways and decorate for both.

NOT oval or round. If you have the space.

I hate them because space is so limited and you can't put food on the table.

We got rid of a beautiful oval Pennsylvania cherry big dining table about 10 years ago and LOVE LOVE our newer one! It is rectangular, has leaves like the oval one, but we can actually include food on the table on the corners!

It also doesn't have that "skirt" underneath the top. The one people always bump into getting in and out of their chairs.

Round with leaves.

Only one large leaf for the DR table, but my antique mahogany kitchen table has two drop leaf sides and four leaves- versatile! Originally a DR table, of course. For everyday I have sides up/ no leaves. One of my best thrift finds from ReStore. Excellent condition and I paid either 30 or 40 dollars. The chairs were shot, but they were too delicate and I did not want chairs anyway so they sold just the table to me for my new downsized kitchen.

Round with leaves. Tried the big rectangular one years ago and put up with it for a year and got rid of it and never looked back.

With round you can walk around the table easily, no bruises from corners, plenty of space for food if you don't have a centerpiece or "stuff" on your table; I save that for the side table.

With two leaves in it seats up to 10, a bit tight in my dining room, but those occasions are not frequent now. I don't use a leaf for 4 people, very intimate dining, easy to talk and hear everything, reach all the food, etc.

I got a rectangular one but it’s narrow with 2 leaves that are always on.

I'm another one for round with leaves. We have an oval with leaves, but round is so convivial!

Round is the most attractive and friendly way to dine. Many round tables have a couple of leafs to add for larger groups or drop leafs for a couple of people. Very versitle table without the bothersome table legs in the way of knees and feet!

I'd look for something small in scale that is an antique (or has an antique look to it). When it comes to dining rooms, I'm a matchy-matchy person so I'd want it to closely match the corner cabinet in wood and style.

Rectangle with 6 chairs. Modern Farmhouse. Fits our dining space well. I like square table with 8 chairs but couldn't find one when I was shopping. That's my next table.

@BirkiLady I forgot about the legs on the rectangular tables, so in the way all the time. Our round table is a pedestal, so nice not to have to work around the legs with chair legs! Another plus for round tables.

Many times I place the food dishes on the sidetable except for condiments and as hostess pass the dishes around and put them back, then do it again for seconds....not many will get up and walk over for seconds, except hubby of course

Round with pedestal. And extra leafs. (Not sure about the spelling for a table.)

'Anyhow', I prefer round mainly because it's easier to walk aRound. No sharp edges, etc.

@FastDogWalker2 , I have a formal dining table in my dining room that is rectangular. My kitchen table and almost all my occasional tables are oval or round, not square. Easier to get around, no hard edges.

I just bought a new kitchen table, not yet delivered, that is round and has an undercarriage that does not obstruct leg movement underneath the table. I like that. Can't wait to update my kitchen with it! LM

Would the chairs also need replacing to match a new one? A different thought would be to get the old one cut down.

A different size would need all tablecloths too.

This must be why I can't deal with changes.

I have a large rectangular table. It has to accommodate 8 at any time. Our kids and grandkids are here most of the Summer.

When we have guests we add another table at the end of the dining table and make it T shaped. It works well for us.

@Sooner ...Uh Oh, you just described my beautiful French Country dining room set in distressed cream and table top is cherry...I absolutely love it and have two leaves, if needed, for company....It has that lovely scalloped "skirt" that you can bump into, but only if you cross your legs...so we just adjust our chairs when crossing legs is preferred...LOL

I prefer round tables. I wanted to comment on your wonderful corner cupboard. I would suggest opening the door and having some of your china or other pieces on display.
