Traditional Furnishings with Modern Art

What do you think?

I think it looks odd to have modern abstract art with such traditional furnishings. The paintings really contast with the rest of the room. I prefer art that complements not competes. Notice the book on the table in the left foreground that has the same colors as the paintings. Very contrived IMO.

I do like portions of the room, but the ART on the wall, its a no for me. But to each his own. I love the shabby wall color and the chandeliers.

I don't care for traditional style decor (including this room) but I LOVE the artwork....but not together.

I think the artwork keeps this room from being a stuffy bore. (Even though I'm not fond of the colors in the artwork.)

The art work takes away from the room which isn't so appealing as is.

No, this room does not work for me, I don't like the artwork with this room, but if you take it away-the room is too neutral and colorless......

The fact that the painting above the fireplace and the book in the lower left hand corner match so perfectly is annoying as heck. Books are made to be used, not fashionably placed in a room so it looks pretty.

@Peaches McPhee Some design "experts" go as far as arranging books BY COLOR in bookcases! I am a voracious reader--that scenario is never going to happen in my home.

@wilma I like the room you show. Like the paintings, too, but not together in such a classic, traditional architectural setting. It takes real genius to force the marriage of these styles and requires a light, deft hand and a discerning eye which few people, even designers, have.

If I was forced to use one of the two paintings I would keep the softer, more "fuzzy" looking one rather than the geometric Mondrian styled one.

The furnishings are too traditional and the artwork is too modern (and in colors that totally fight with the room itself).

I find the room to be drab, dull and boring. So the contemporary art adds important punch and interest. It's the best part of the decor, IMO. I love to combine periods in a room.

All right, I'll be the lone ranger... I think most of the elements in these rooms are quite nice and I think the rooms are, overall, pleasing, though tweaks are needed. As a rule, I don't like modern art and yet I do very much like some pieces. While these two pieces aren't dreadful, I'd not have placed them in this venue. All that said, throwing a couple of pieces of modern art into an overall traditional or transitional room to 'liven it up' or to 'make it more current' has become so trite and predictable as to have become essentially boring. And by the way, more times than not, it doesn't work, but rather just looks like a glaring disconnect...

I think the art is awful and I wouldn't like it in any setting. The room, on the other hand, is quite lovely. I find nothing dull or boring about it. Very pretty.

@aroc3435 I'm certainly no design expert, but my books are arranged by color in my bookcase. Haha. I find them visually appealing that way, but it also makes for a more organized look in my opinion. I've tried to mix them up, but it makes my brain crazy. LOL

I really dislike abstract art, and would never hang it in my home. In my opinion it looks totally out of place in the room shown.

@Citrine1 Just curious, do you remove the dust jackets from your hardcover books to accomplish that? And what do you do with your paperbacks?

Not only do I read books but am a modest collector and the jackets are part of determining the value of books, among other factors.

This is an interesting thread. It is fascinating to see all the varied reactions to the room itself and the elements engaged and how they strike each of us so differently.

@aroc3435 Yes, I do remove the dust covers. I know they serve a purpose, but to me they are unsightly.

I don't have many paperbacks. The ones I do have, I just put together. I think I have three diet/health related books and 4 collie books (my breeder would give me a book everytime I bought a dog from her).

I have excyclopedias from when my husband was a child which, quite frankly, I have displayed simply because I like the way they look. And I also display many, many books that my husband had as a child.

I really enjoy decorating with books. I have them all over my house, displayed on various shelves and tables. I'm a huge fan of poetry and have many books of poems. As far as reading current works, I usually do that on my kindle.

I did not know that about the jackets adding to the value (ooops). I love that you are a collector. How fun! I love looking at old books at flea markets and such.
