I’ve read on several interior design websites recently that having matching sets of furniture is “out of style”.

I don’t mind looking at tips and ideas, but in the end my family and I are the only ones who need to like the furniture & design elements in our home.

We have some matching pieces in our home.

Our dining room set, table, hutch, chairs, & buffet all came from the same collection & match. Made of solid cherry wood and over 20 years old. The set still looks great today. The furniture is our bedroom matches too.

The bed, dressers, & end tables came from the same pine wood set. We recently switched out the matching 4 poster bed with one that is metal.

When we buy a sofa with a loveseat or chairs, we tend to buy those pieces from the same set. My lamps & tables do not need to match.

Do you have matching sets of furniture?

Both. I'm the 'eclectic' type and have chosen furniture that goes together but not a 'set'.

My parents bought 'sets' in their day. But, when they re-did their livingroom they got separate pieces that went together. So, I've got a little of everything in my home now!

In furniture, I run away fast from anything "in style." All that says is "out of style" in 6 months! Always buy good stuff and stick with enduring styles in classics in furniture.

At least that's my take on it.

The furniture in my bedroom and dining rooms are sets. However, other rooms are decorated with mixed furniture which I love.

I inherited antique pieces, tables, lamps and other and I like the fact I can place them in different areas and they work.. Style and design are based on taste and while many like sets and everything in perfect order which is fine, I enjoy different elements which enhance and stand out in my rooms. In fact the different pieces of furniture are the ones the eye is drawn to when you are in the room. It is all good as they say!

And some years later, I bought it on a great sale! Still love it 25ish years later - and it certainly doesn't match the other woods in the room.

Yes I do. Dining room furniture, bedroom furniture, living room tables, and family room couches are all matching sets. When you buy furniture to last your lifetime and beyond, you don't (or can't) pay attention to trends.

As we've downsized, it's become more eclectic but we still have most of "This End Up" (remember when they had mall stores) furniture that we bought 31 years ago. I use 4 pieces in L.R. and more in office and garage. I bought it because it was rustic, comfortable, indestructable. They used to advertise its extreme versatility (I've even bought new cushions and covers ( I'm sure my son will use it when we 're gone).

Yes, and I have always been very happy with the look of the rooms in my house.

I rarely ever see pictures of homes in magazines that interest me. I acknowledge pretty pictures, but seldom see a picture of a room I would want to live in.

My husband and I built this home for our family to live in comfortably; it was never intended to be a showplace or featured in magazines.

Interesting question. Enjoy reading responses. Our bedroom sets are matched. Hubs and I grew up in homes with mismatched bedroom stuff; not always attractive. Having quality, matched bedroom sets as adults is something we're comfy with. We add interesting lamps and wall decor. The rest of my home is more eclectic. Kitchen cupboard cabinet is a great color of red with a more traditional dark mango wood modern farmhouse table. Everything in open dining room is eclectic. I want my open living room to be more eclectic and am working on that. I put a lot more thought and research into eclectic decor than matched.

I like furniture where the pieces compliment each other but they don't have to be a set. I do like to have the chairs match in a room and the lamps also if they are on an end table.

Our bedroom furniture matches....chest, bed frame/headboard, dresser and mirror. It is from Ethan Allen. It was purchased 46 years ago and I love it as much as the day it entered our house ! Table and dining chairs match but every thing else is an eclectic combination that pleases me...don't care much for trends !
