Reminder to check around your house

On the other side of our neighborhood, a home suffered terrible damage when part of their dead tree fell.

The massive limb hit one of their cars, broke 2 windows on the house, damaged the siding, and pulled down the gutter and down-spouting.

It has to be 10's of thousands of dollars in damage. I was talking to the homeowner and she said the insurance adjuster came out and determined that the HOME OWNERS are at fault for not removing the clearly dead tree. The insurance company has no intention of paying. The owners hired an attorney.

I have to admit the tree is really dead, dead old and very dry. They are lucky nobody was injured or killed.

My property has acres of trees. I had four young family men help me move.

Those fools were over the moon and spent a couple of days cutting off things around the house and making firewood. Come on guys, about the bed?? The amount of equipment making noise....

Don't blame the insurance company - home owners just don't believe a tree will fall on them. So Stupid I met with my tree surgeon last week for 3 tall Ash trees to be removed due to the Ash Bore. I want them out of here before winter and possibility of an ice storm. One tree used to be straight up - now leaning half over my lawn toward my large screened porch. Yes, it's costly but...............and my roof is only 3 years old.

Either for their own use,or to sell it.

It's nice to live on a treed property but trees have to be maintained and it's not cheap.

I am not a big fan of trees around houses. We have a not really lovely small to medium oak tree I have my eye on. It's too near the house to suit me.

But it's going to cost a few thousand probably to remove and I'm not sure what to do then. We would need to re-landscape.

my insurance place now, if you have a tree touching your house, it has to be trimmed or removed to continue insurance.

@Abrowneyegirl I suspect the people who own the property right behind my rental don't have any idea there's a huge limb across the back food of their detached garage. It doesn't seem to have knocked through the roof, but....

The number of huge trees that went down during this storm seems to be more than went down during Superstorm Sandy, but the water damage is much, much less and that's good. Not everyone on Long Island has power restored, but most houses are going to be livable when there's power.

We have 2 large maples in our yard - one in front and one in the back. They're as old as the house (50+ years) and I'm convinced they keep our basement dry, even during deluges. We water them during very dry summers. We have an arborist assess them every couple of years to ensure they're healthy. So far, so good. 🤞🏻

Suggestion for when you take down the oak: replace with arbor vitae strip or another evergreen type tree. Less messing with leaves !

@jlkz OH NO! Arbor vitae nearly ate the garage at the old house! I had someone to take them out and put in a new bed and plants. I told him two things could happen and neither was good: they could grow bigger or they could die. They were simply getting gigantic!

We really need some sort of tree where this oak is because there is a part of the front that needs shade--Oklahoma is VERY hot in the summers. And allergies keep me from ever planting evergreens. But they are so pretty! But we need something not so close to the house.

Trees are really hard to select aren't they? Some are week and don't do well in the storms we have; some drop things on the lawn; some attract squirrels; and some grow so fast and so big.

@jlkz Yep! My mom would get some plant (usually from my grandmother) and stick it somewhere without much thought and sure 'nuff we'd be digging it out in a year or two!

It must be my age or something, but so many things I used to love are now a source of stress for me, and trees close to the house are one of those things.

In the last five years we have removed over 40 trees in various states of dying to dead, and still have two more that need done.

I love a home surrounded by glorious shade trees. They add beauty and charm, shade and character to a home. I have always had huge maples around my houses. But I'm over worrying about the wind and ice dropping huge chucks of them on the roof. We are removing the last two this year (hopefully) and will then plan how to do some replanting much further from the house.

It's just now worth the worry to me anymore. I miss the shade and the beauty of the trees, but it's one more thing that I don't have to worry about.

I have to agree I love a lot with lovely mature shade trees. It really adds a nature beauty to a home.

But the flip side is also the maintenance and the $$$$. Trees require skill and care to keep them happy and healthy for their lifespan. It is a shame because I know the expense is what keeps a lot people from planting trees.

In our last neighborhood of all newly-built homes, the builders put 2 trees on each site. We added several more to landscape the yard but at least 50% of homeowners pulled their trees OUT. They didn't want to deal with them.

I've always loved trees............But, lately, I've been thinking about embers from fires in the various areas, flying over to trees from a distance, which could be very dangerous for everyone.

Several years ago we had gone downtown in the little town we live in and parked in the square that is in the middle of town. The streets are all tree lined. We just got out of dh's truck with friends and were walking across the street to a restaurant when we heard a crash, looked back and saw a large tree limb had fallen on someone's truck. It was ours. The mayor told us not to worry, the town would take care of it. (They had been aware that day there was a problem with the tree but had not blocked it off.) The truck was totaled and when our insurance company contacted the town, no they bore no responsibility. It amazes me homeowners are held responsibe, yet a municipality accepts no responsibility.
