Sewing Invisible Zippers SOS

I am hoping you can give me some pointers about sewing invisible zippers in a dress, for instance. As many as I've done....and have used different tutorials, I can't seem to get my sewing close enough to the zipper teeth.

Should my zipper foot rest on top of the teeth? But I thought the foot was supposed to rest against the teeth?

Any thoughts much appreciated!!

@Harpa Surely not on top of the teeth as it could easily damage them. It has been a long time since I've done one...

It's been a long, long time since I sewed an invisible zipper into a garement I was making. I recommend go to Youtube and see what you can find. Sewing is a nice hobby. Enjoy

Long time for me too - but as I dip mentally in my old sewing basket............don't you have to use a different 'foot'? Explain: for normal sewing the machine foot (not sure of correct name) has 2 sides with a split in the center where the needle comes down for straight stitching.

For zipper to be 'installed'......have to change the foot to a single sided foot - Explain: looks like half of the regular 'foot'.

Darn: wish I could recall what that is correctly called.

However, with only half of the foot - you can snug right up to one side of the zipper - then turn material around and do the other side.

If I'm wrong...............I'll watch for correct info.

There is a special zipper foot that you can purchase that will enable success with every try. You can do it with the regular foot but it's harder and you don't want to travel over the zipper teeth. You'll be very surprised at how easy they are to do with the foot especially designed for this. Good luck, as you know, they are beautiful when done.....

Yes, I remember seeing that half foot. (from somewhere?) I don't think one came with my machine. I'll double - no, triple check!

eta: Nope, don't have one. Just the regular zipper foot that you can flip to sew on one side or the other.

If your regular foot allows you to move the needle to the right or left, without shifting the foot, it can be used. It should look like o()o()o.

If you have special foot for this job it will have the needle hole in the center and underneath, on each side, will be a groove for the zipper teeth.

There is also a one sided foot which will work, o()

@Kachina624 invisible zippers have their own special zipper foot, they're plastic. It can be done with a regular zipper foot but so much easier using the correct one.

Ah-ha! It is the invisible zipper foot that I did not have! Which should make life much easier!
