MADELINE STUART'S LITTLE SANTA BARBARA HOUSE

Madeline Stuart is a designer I've posted before, who usually does very luxe, historically accurate Los Angeles renovations of legendary houses. This historic 1930 cottage is described as her "Santa Barbara hideaway", and it is low-key and cute. She kept the cozy, 'California-vintage' feeling.

In the entry, 18th century Spanish table paired with modern black and white photography and ancient Asian pottery.

Although she painted the original wood walls to lighten the living room, she kept bare the character-full ceiling. She said the chairs are 18th century Danish:

Vintage leather chesterfield chairs.

Rattan chairs in den are from the nineteen Forties. Beautiful, diverse fabrics on pillows.

Glimpse of breakfast area. I don't think, from other spreads I've seen on her famous cottage, that the walls are as stark white as they appear here-- I think they are more creamy. I like those graceful Klismos style chairs.

Sunny kitchen. Those are the original cabinets! Look at that 'pull-out' cutting board. Our kitchen has one of those vintage touches, which we were able to save, even though the contractor cracked ours just a bit.

Having a vaulted bedroom ceiling, plus French doors to the outside, makes a small bedroom feel so luxurious. She elected to keep the original terra cotta tiles in the cottage. Love that carved Spanish chest at the foot of the bed.

I think there are just two bedrooms, this being the other. The lamps were made from antique gilt candlesticks:

I like that she resisted the temptation to over-renovate, and kept the unpretentious, old-California feeling that the cottage must have always had.

She's pretty versatile-- from authentic, Spanish-inflected California cottage, to high Hollywood glam...

@Oznell Just beautiful California dreaming. Santa Barbara is beautiful and has so much to offer. This house is not ostentacious but yet just beautiful and looked lived in.

I love everything about this house. It is so well done.

If I had to change 1 thing it would be the white paint color. I would like more of an off white on the kitchen cabinets and walls in the bedrooms..but maybe it is the camera as you have said @Oznell .

I love the bones of the Santa Barbara house, the outdoor spaces and quite a few of the elements. On the other hand, there are enough elements I don't particularly care for that keep me from really liking the overall design of the house.

To answer your question, @sligo , no, I haven't seen any decorating books by her-- although, I think she has at least one out, on Amazon.

Have seen her stuff in magazines and online, and noticed that I tended to stop and drool over quite a few of the rooms she did!

Absolutely love her cottage, but then I'd be willing to live in a tent if I could live in gorgeous Santa Barbara.

I like it! There are a few furniture changes I would make, but most of the furnishings & rooms are fine with me. I especially love the outdoor spaces.

What a very lovely home, so warm and inviting. I especially love the first bedroom pictured. I admire the style and designs. I understand how walls made of wood can darken a room but painting over wood isn't something I would do. It depends on the wood I might add. I also think the kitchen is appealing with the original cabinets. I love the vaulted ceilings also. All in all a very beautiful home!

The Santa Barbara hideaway is great. I love the wood ceilings and walls in the living areas. The furniture is comfy and cozy but still striking. That coffee table is different. I thought it was perfect for that room. Pretty much everything appealed to me in this one!
