From Dark Colors to Light Neutrals

What do you think of this before & after?

The before looks like a mishmash of various pieces of furniture & other things that somehow found their way into the space. I like the dark wooden ceiling beams.

Quite a transformation in the after! I like the new furniture arrangement in the after. The chairs look comfy, but I don’t like light furniture against light walls. I’d prefer the chairs and the lamp be a contrasting color. I don’t like the window treatments, artwork, stools, or chandelier in the after.

Although the new room looks very nice, it is always sad when wood is painted over because when tastes change, which they will, removing paint from wood is very difficult.

The after is better but for me that room is just too crowded. I really don’t like the overhead fixture.

@wilma I do not care for either room, but I do like how bright the second room is. I do not like to see wood or paneling painted over. Even though the first room is dark, I think the furniture, which I do not care for, looks much more comfortable. I guess it just looks homey.

I like the "after" better but it could be improved upon! I wish they wouldn't have painted the beams (the door and window trim don't bother me though) and I'd remove that ugly picture and replace the roman shades.

Although the room looks brighter in the after pic, I don't like the ceiling fixture, the stripes on the chairs (which look like an odd extension of the painted window trim), and what on earth is depicted in that dark black and putrescent green poster on the wall? As others have stated, the room is overcrowded with furniture (or perhaps the chairs are too large for the room, or there are too many of them).

I wouldn't have painted the beams, be nice if they left it as it was for contrast. I don't get the picture by the door. I'd put something else or just not be anything there. Maybe an area rug. Floor looks a little bare, will center the table and chairs. I'd also change blue window treatments. Doesn't match.

I had beams and always wanted them painted, but something always came up to delay that project. They really do lower the feeling of the ceiling.

To me, the second room needs a different arrangement and seating for four is not enough.

The after is much better. The painted trim and beams are a big improvement. The furniture isn't bad, it's just not right for the room. Four chairs around a round coffee table seem odd to me.

I'm not sure what room this is. It looks like a conversation area off of the kitchen to me.

I would have not painted the beams and trim and the ceiling light is awful other than that I like it.

The Before room is a DISASTER, the After room looks much better, but its a bit too crowded....

See, this is my gripe with so many 'before and after' features... All too often the 'before' picture isn't really showing the room decorated at all... It's merely showing the room in advance of the 'after' shot, if that makes any sense... It's like they take the least flattering 'before' picture they can find, often of an empty space, and then we're all supposed to ooh and ahhh over the 'after'... In this instance, yes, the 'after' shot is lighter and brighter, but I don't really care for the way it's decorated. Goes without saying, I don't much care for the 'before' shot either, though the space itself isn't bad...

@faeriemoon I'm hating that look... Used to see it occasionally and now seeing it more often... Must be 'on trend'... Four chairs arranged in a conversation circle only works for me outside around a fire pit or on a talk show... Otherwise, it just looks contrived...

Does anyone really just sit around like that at home, facing a coffee table? It doesn't seem realistic. I think it would be rare. Maybe I just don't live like that.

The bar stools could be a bit of a trip hazard, with their spreading feet and spindly legs. And it's worse now that they've got that built-in structure against the window wall.

It's too bad they painted all the wood. If this were my home, I would have kept the wood and found a wall color to complement it. And kept those pretty windows.

Even if they wanted the beams lighter, maybe bleach them or whatever technique would have changed it.

Painting everything white took away all its character and personality.
