Have any of you ever done this and if so, can you offer any tips or suggestions? We are putting our old one in a cabin and would like to paint it to look a little more rustic. I am going to google that topic, but thought I would try here also. TIA!

When we moved back to Denver, I had our almond refrigerator repainted black to go with the stainless and black appliances in the new house. A company came out and set up an electrostatic paint booth in our garage, painted the refrigerator and think it had to set up for 24 hours before being moved into the house. It came out perfect, but the trick is to use the right kind of paint.

I found a guy who painted ours, he came to the house. Before internet days, I just looked in yellow pages. You would never know it was painted, very durable, the paint lasted longer than fridge.

My mother had her refrigerator painted similar to the method StElmoQn mentioned above. They did a beautiful job, this was 30 years ago. She went from avocado green to gold (which was an in style color at the time and matched her range). They even shaded it.

Me, I wanted a light grey refrigerator instead of while; took it to an auto body shop. Several years later I painted my refrigerator myself. I went from almond to light grey. I removed the hardware, cleaned it well, masked it off and used a roller. The paint I used was made for metal and I had it tinted. It came out really nice and I did it in one day. Just moved it into the middle of the floor, didn't even empty it. Never had problem with the finish chipping or peeling. Note, my frig wasn't new; don't know if I would have tackled the task on a new one.

My husband and I painted our refrigerator ourselves. We bought paint especially formulated for appliances we bought the spray paint at Lowes. It was almond color and we painted it black and it came out beautiful. The reason we painted it because it was showing signs of rust and the refrigerator was working fine.I would do it again if I wanted to change colors on any appliance. We brought the frig. outside and did it.

How long would it take them to do it, a couple of hours? So you're out $300. I guess it depends on how much you really like that old appliance.

Bought a Harvest Gold 'fridge when we bought our first house in 1975 and had it professionally repainted Almond in 1985. When we moved into our second house in 1986 we moved that 'fridge into the garage where it spent another 27 years being beat up by bicycles, lawnmowers and snow blowers and yet that paint job looked awesome right up to the day that we sent that refrigerator to appliance heaven just this past November . Yup, 38 years and one repair - amazing, isn't it?

I don't remember what it cost to have it repainted but it was worth every penny and more.

Maria

Some years ago I sold a condo to a young man - an art teacher in the local school system. The condo was a total wreck, but he could afford it and knew he could fix it up. But he didn't have enough cash (or credit left) to get a refrigerator. It happened we had a large brown one left from our last relocation, so I gave it to him.

Some weeks later, I was invited to come for dinner. He had painted that old refrigerator with the most gorgeous array of tropical flowers! I've never seen anything like it before or since, but it was amazing, and in his all white kitchen it was striking. Not at all "tacky" or in poor taste. So if you know an artist, have them do your fridge in something appropriate to your cabin.

I've also seen chalkboard paint on refrigerators and people have decoupaged them. When I had my first one done by the auto body shop (1985), it only cost me around $100. It was a used refrigerator so I didn't hesitate to paint it.
