GLIN CASTLE IN IRELAND

Yay. The FitzGeralds apparently were on the brink of having to sell their ancestral home, famous Glin Castle, in Ireland, but heir Catherine FitzGerald and husband Dominic West found a way to hang on to it.

I've always loved the exuberant use of color in Irish manors and castles:

Their drawing room strikes me as so cheerful and liveable.

Drama in the dining room.

Chef Rachel Duff, making traditional soda bread.

Catherine FitzGerald's husband, Dominic West, in the kitchen.

The family walking back toward the house from a sundial in the garden. What a pretty vista.

Living in a castle? Not so much. What about heat, WI-FI, modern kitchens & all other conveniences. Even Highclere castle, beautiful as it is, I've read about living there. Not for me. Lots of work and you need $$$$$ for maintenance.

@Oznell Beautiful pictures! I spent a few nights at Glin Castle when I was in college. One night our group slept on the floor of the gate house, and another time a few of us stayed in the castle itself - in the modern end. I also got to cook a meal there for my fellow students. At the time, Desmond and Olga Fitzgerald were the owners, but they were not at home when we were there. Our prof had arranged for the stay. I think Olga worked for Vogue, but I'm not sure about that.

@Oznell To tell you the truth, we were on a bicycle study tour at the time, and our interests were food, shelter, and credits toward our final grades. That was in the '70s. I did return a few years later with my DH.

What elegance, this is my taste and there is much about this castle I love and wouldn't change! The furnishings are exquisite as is all the art work. I am impressed. The gardens are spectacular also, it must be so peaceful to walk through them. Sign me up for at stay!!!!!

Definitely not my style but it is still beautiful and was fun to take a peak inside. The grounds are stunning!!!!! Thanks so much for finding, and posting, these homes (or castles .... LOL)!!!

I'm so happy they found a way to hold onto this. It would be a "crying shame" to have to let it go. The video was very inspiring. What a beautiful place to live. What memories to pass on to children and grandchildren. Thanks for posting the video, too.

Beautiful castle, beautiful grounds and actually somewhat 'homey' inside, which has to be a minor miracle. Many lovely elements and gracious, appealing rooms. Interestingly enough, though, as much as one might appreciate something like this from afar or as a visitor, I don't think I'd want to call it home. As nice a job as they've done to keep it looking like an actual home rather than a show place, perhaps it's still all just a bit overwhelming for me.
