This is my hub's happy place, land we've owned with 4 other families since 1994. Nothing upscale. It's rugged, an hour drive from home and 160 acres of strip pit land. Slightly hilly but great hiking land. Metal cabin, solar powered with a big, bunk room. The guys work hard to keep it basic and simple.

After living at a quiet beach town (except summer months were busy) for 25 years, a friend and wife are moving to Colorado. He's developed health problems where hot climate is not good for him. He's more excited than she is, but his comment was - Mountains have always been my natural environment for respite.

What type(s) of natural environment is your place of respite? If you can, post a pic -- or even copy and paste. Hubs loves lake living. He'd also like to have a mountain cabin in Asheville area. Right now he's grateful to have a metal cabin on the Plaines with strip pits out his front door. His happy place. I like a quiet beach town near amenities and conveniences. Two favorite trips were Maui and Key West. What about you?

I don't have any pix but I think my choice would be the "high" desert in AZ or NM. Lived in Henderson, NV which was too hot but do like being near moutains and the desert. Definitely NOT near water--too many problems, too damp.

I love Colorado and the high Rockies but from a practical standpoint, it's not the best place to retire. The weather is severe with snow to shovel and drive in, and lots of cold in winter heat in summer. Then there's the altitude which in not good for those with or who may develop heart or respiratory issues.

New Mexico is a good compromise: we have mountains...I'm looking at a 10,300 footer right now. We have some snow but not enough to inconvenience anyone. It's a little too hot in summer but nights are cool and everything is air conditioned.

I have no mosquitoes, fleas or cockroaches as it's too dry. There is so much to see and do with beautiful scenery and not hoards of people. I love the three cultures we have; Anglo, Hispanic and Native American, as they make life so interesting .

Deliver me from ever having to live near an ocean. Not my thing.

Since I was a young girl I went to a summer house in the mountains with a lake close by. I loved it, the tranquility, the peace and quiet, all the friends I made, the fun and enjoyment. I wouldn't have traded it for anything else.

With that being said I also love the ocean and am fortunate to live not far from the shore. I love the mountains and the shore and found both vacationing in Maine.

My dream would be to split half the year in Sedona, AZ and half the year in Cape May, New Jersey.

We've vacationed in Sedona twice, but I immediately fell in love with its beautiful coral mountains reaching into the beautiful blue skies! The town has a haunting Native American spirit, along with much of its culture. I truly felt a connection with this area.

Yet, I'm also drawn to the ocean, its always been a calming and soulful place for me We've vacationed there almost every year for close to 20 years. It's a quaint little town with lovely Victorian inns and architecture and a charming lighthouse that you can climb to the top of and have a marvelous view of the entire area. You don't even need a car while there, you can walk everywhere, or bike like we love to do. It's a very relaxing and homey place to be.

I couldn't choose between these two places, so decided I'd need to split my time between the two!
