I'm jinxed I'm convinced with Appliances😡😡😡😡

First, the crappy Samsung fridge I bought 3 years ago. ice maker stopped working

at 18 months. It continues to aggravate me with broken ice maker😡-- Samsung refused to fix it after 1 year.

Second, GE washing machine died after 4 years. Motherboard died -- $324 to replace. Bought new one last year🤞🏻

Third, my GE dishwasher died at 5 years old. Bought new one.

Now, Maytag dryer purchased 6/17/2018 died😡. Bought the dryer because had 10 year warranty on motor, drum. I was excited because I "thought" great at least it'll be under warranty. I bought this model because salesman assured me it was a good product🙄

Today, I had appliance repairman come out. Charged me $75 and it is the motor/drum mechanism. The repairman told me it would be approx $300 and no warranty on motor (part) plus, it maybe the sensors. I called Maytag about my warranty.

Grrrrrrr first I have to pay for a "certified" Maytag service person sent by Maytag. It's $129 for diagnostic appt. -- The motor is covered & will be sent to the technician to install. BUT, the service call & install fee not covered😡. The estimate to complete : $289 based on 2 hour minimum -- meaning even if it takes 1 hour I still pay full amount.

I'm furious the cost of the dryer was only $526.76 with tax & delivery fee. Of course, if I have anyone other than Maytag certified repair it I lose the balance of the warranty & no warranty on part. Plus, they will not send motor to outside repairman.

Do they manufacture anything meant to last ...ugh...

I swear I'm jinxed and am going broke replacing appliances 🤷‍♀️🙈🙄

I’m so sorry you’re having such a terrible time with appliances.

It probably doesn’t even but my friend ( like you) has had appliance problems all within about one month or so.

First his refrigerator ( had to buy new one), then his gas stove ( needed major parts, etc).

Then something else...I just remember it was 3 things.

This guy is old school. He fixes my things and he fixes his.

We both replaced the inside of my toilet 2 times on powder room one and once on master bath toilet. I hate fricken toilets. I have 3 & 1/2 bathrooms and before we worked on them only one worked!

I feel rich because for the first time in about a year they all work...I can use all 4. Wow! Not just for decoration.

When you have a house it’s like spinning plates keeping everything useable!

This Spring it’s going to cost a zillion dollars but I’m determined to get everything done perfectly like when my husband was alive.

I just hate having people come in and when they do the term “half as($) job” fits!

I admire the way you persevere and get’er done!

@homedecor1 first i want to say, that i am sorry that you are going through this.

i don't think that you are jinxed. i don't know which models you bought, but i never buy the newest model available when i need something. why? because they haven't been tested by real people yet.

i also don't buy appliances that have an electronic interface. they are not made to last.

i didn't know samsung makes refrigerators. i thought they made tv's. i may be old school, but i take into consideration what a company is known for. kinda like buying an hp laptop when hp is known for making printers, or going to a chinese restaurant and ordering steak or fried chicken. in all cases, these companies don't make the best of those add-on items.

when my washing machine died, maybe 7 years ago, i bought a ge, but i bought the old school type with the agitator and knobs, no electronic interface. same with the dryer. and yes, the salesman made the mistake of trying to get me to look at the new ones with all the bells and whistles. the tone of my voice when i said that i only need the washing machine to wash cloths, clearly let him know that i was not the one.

the only brand of washing machines that i know of that are made to last are speed queen.

the one thing that all appliances have in common is electricity. do you know if your house took a power hit? it does happen in the summer, especially if your electric company plays with the electricity, by turning it down to conserve electricity. it is possible that there is something preventing your appliances from getting the amount of current that they need to run properly. the wiring could be going bad.

yes, i know most people do not have money to just test something like the electricity current coming into their house, or however you say it (hopefully, you know what i'm trying to say), but that many appliances going bad in 5 years, makes me wonder about the electricity. they do take a lot of power and perhaps the house doesn't have enough current to support the new models. while "they" claim to be energy efficient, my electric bill did not go down one darn dime by having them.

if you know an electrician or can ask people you know if they know an electrician that will come and check out your house for free, it may be helpful.

i don't know if the electric company will come out and test this for you for free, but i would ask, just not say why.

A few do, but you have to look for them.

The worst thing to do is go to a big box store and buy what you see on the floor. Manufacturer licensed dealers are the best place to go. That's no guarantee you will end up with the best, so when you go, have one or two manufacturers in mind that have been rated "best." Ask questions.

@homedecor1 , well that takes the cake. Such short life spans for such expensive stuff you can't do without. So sorry to read the list😩. I replaced two appliances this year but they were 14 years old so it wasn't so bad.

That warranty story is awful. I would be looking for that salesman! LM

My home and everything in it is only 5 years old. I have already replaced my KitchenAid dishwasher, had a repairman out to fix the ice maker in my Samsung frig=$400. And I just got a new Maytag washer and dryer last week! The deliverymen said that appliances only last 4-8 years. Yup, that's about right.

This sounds like my life. We have had three dishwashers in 14 years and we don't use it everyday. I have a maytag washer that saves so much water that it does not get the clothes wet sometimes. We had a sears refrigerator for 20 years and the salesman said not to expect that kind of life from any refrigerator you buy today even though they cost a fortune. Appliances are not cheap and installation is really expensive so they should last a while.

This appliance problem is a plague to consumers. We can’t trust the durability of high ticket appliances anymore. Everything is breaking soon after purchase. I just posted about how this trend is affecting us financially. Someone in government needs to start talking about this and doing something to protect consumers from shoddy products. My friend just returned her new microwave. a GE, to Brandsmart. The oven broke down on the 30th day of ownership! I don’t know about you, but I expect a microwave to last a lot longer than 30 days.

I can relate about the Samsung fridge. Ice maker broke after one year. We are using old fashioned ice cube trays.

Local repair men said they don't fix Samsung ice makers.

What mystifies me is why the general public puts up with these shoddy appliances. I guess because we have no choice. If some politician wants my vote, he/she ought to run on a platform of improved standards for appliances. @homedecor1. Everyone raves about Speed Queen washers/dryers.

I used to get all my appliances at this one store. The owner was friendly with my appliance repair guy and boy, did I have appliances breaking down a lot. Hmmmmm. Finally, I figured either my repair guy isn't very good at his job or the owner of the appliance shop is sellling me lemons.

I changed appliance stores and got a new repair guy and now things break but on a more normal schedule.

But I feel for you as my dishwasher broke last month and my fridge had a leak shortly after that! Ugh.

I hope I don't feel your pain @homedecor1 but I probably will. My Samsung refrigerator (which has been problem free) will be two years old in February. Our washer/dryer is at least 15 years old and the dryer no longer cools down at cycles end like it is supposed to. Having to replace them is something I dread. I guess I'll look at basic models from Speed Queen and Whirlpool. Maytag was a possibility, but I'd better take it off the list. Think of how much landfill space would be saved it appliances lasted thirty years like the simple appliances did in my parent's day.

I had no idea that appliances were that bad. My stove has to be over 35 years old. The top burners have to be taken apart to clean. I have wanted a new one but now I don't know. DH now cleans them. It is a Magic Chef. Maybe it's a keeper.

The icemaker on my now 11 year old Samsung refrigerator also broke after around the first year. I was able to buy a replacement icemaker on the internet for about $100. It was really pretty easy to install and the fridge has been trouble free ever since - knock wood!

@homedecor1 First of all Magtag is full of you know what. It's a warranty and you have to pay up front -- how ridiculous. You have my sympathy. You are having a string of bad luck appliances. Cars, appliances just about everything is no longer made like the old days in the 40's, 50's & 60's. It is really too bad because money doesn't grown on trees!

Well first off -- today was a very frustrating day🙄. I spoke to a very nice young lady at Maytag who was unaware about the fees the appliance people were going to charge🤔. I asked her to ask a "supervisor" to contact me for clarification.

The call center did call me and yes there is a fee for diagnosing but not warrantied part. I have no options around this😡

Then I get email from appliance repair company located in Orlando, FL. I reach out to this company. I could not understand one thing the spanish lady w/heavy accent was saying...still waiting for english speaking rep to call me (that was 9:30 am).

I am not married to a guy who knows how to fix things or wants to. Therefore, I will need to get it repaired (warranty on new motor is only 90 days) or reality buy new one! I never buy "top of the line" appliances -- for this reason! just aggravating😡

I am sorry that you are having appliance problems. My dryer is the original one I bought when I got married in 1986, it is a White Westinghouse and I am currently on my second washer and it has started to leak from underneath. Needless to say I too will be in search of a replacement. Our repairman said the fewer knobs and options, the better off I would be as all those things "break down." GOOD LUCK

Had Samsung fridge for about 8 yrs, it was so loud my kitchen /family room in one room half the time I couldn't hear my tv cuz so loud making ice, I will never again by samsung unless a tv. Love samsung tv they should just stay with that. I will never buy LG anything I review and seems LG isn't that good. I do have GE washer & dryer no problems. I like them the washer is HE with agitator can make more water & soak, extra rinse. Love it. Seems any brand after 10 yrs you are lucky to get much out of it. A dishwasher I did get Bosch wow expensive but worth it my DD I got her one she got alot going on & washes everyday 3 tier loves it too. I highly recommend it but wait for a sale if you can.

It's not just you. OP.

I'm 66 and remember my first washer/dryer lasting years between 3 moves.

We moved in this 3 year old home 14 years ago and are on our 3rd dishwasher (our first replacement was pricy, too). Finally gave up and bought about the cheapest replacement a few years back, so far so good.

Every other major appliance has issues. we may go cheap on them, too, if we'll have to replace soon.
