Receiving Candles as a Gift

Went to a few luncheons this holiday season and we exchange gifts. Lots of candles were given and received as gifts.

I never burn candles. I only place them on a candle warmer to enjoy the scent; however, I only do it during the winter months.

Do you enjoy receiving candles as a gift?

@BunSnoop I don't burn candles, because my cat is on everything. I'm afraid he would get burned. I would not want to receive one as a gift.

I've been given so many candles for gifts. They just sit in boxes, as I don't burn candles, never have. I don't give candles for gifts either.

I plan on rounding all of mine up and donating them. I'm sure someone will use them. That someone just isn't me.

Most scented candles are made of parrafin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both known carcinogens). These can damage brain, lungs, and central nervous system. Many wicks contain lead, which can create high levels of airborne lead when burned.

I like giving and receiving candles. However, at Christmas I always am sure not to give a specifically Christmas scent because I don't think it will be used until next Christmas. I generally give pine or cinnamon which I think are winter scents.

I don't burn a lot of candles in the warmer weather and for that reason I don't give them as gifts either. I think winter lends itself to candle burning because of the short days.

I wouldn't give a candle to someone who doesn't like candles though. That's just weird.

No, I don't. The assumption seems to be that everyone likes scented candles when the reality is some of us don't like them and can't burn them because they irritate our noses and throats. I'll give them as gifts but only to those I know enjoy the scent. The only candles I ever burn and then sparingly, are those I've got for myself that are not scented. When I receive scented candles, I re-gift them.

@Lorik62- There has been a federal ban on candle wicks containing lead since 2003. This applies to any candle sold on the U.S. marketplace.

In the 1970s, there was a voluntary agreement amongst manufacturers to stop the use of lead in candle wicks, but over the years a small percentage could still be found (most notably - no surprise - in those imported from China). Therefore, the federal ban was put into place.

You should not find any candles sold in the U.S. with wicks containing lead. Other metals like zinc or tin are used and are safe.

I give candles only to people I know so I know what scents they prefer. Only quality ones that I know are safe.

Flameless are nice, especially the older Candle Impressions ones (what happened to them?). Never burn real ones, too dangerous.

I love burning candles. I light one every day all year round. I only use B&BW candles.

I only give them as gifts to my mom. She loves them too, and only in the scents I know she likes.

I do not burn candles mainly because of the scent. It is irritating to me and extremely irriating to pets because of their acute sense of smell, like magnify ours by 1,000. I would not do that to a pet of mine.

I also do not give candles because of the same reason.

I like candles if they are good quality, either unscented or scented with a good clean fragrance....not flower scented.

No dime or dollar store candles.
