Backsplash in the kitchen

Long story short I am going to have the tile backsplash removed in my kitchen and go with slab granite.

I am thinking I will have all the outlets moved up so that they are just under the cabinets to avoid having 7 outlet openings cut into slab thus giving a cleaner look.

Any thoughts from those who have already done this?

I have granite counters and backsplash circling the kitchen. All of my outlets are above the backsplash. Never considered any other arrangement and it works fine.

If they are moving all the electronic things, might consider wired under cabinet lighting at the same time if you don't already have it.

One thing to remember if you move the outlet up the wall is that you will see the cord. I don't like seeing cords no matter where they are but something to thing about. It's your kitchen so have the changes made to what works best for you.

Years ago when I renovated the kitchen to my first home, I did just that. All of the outlets were mounted under the cabinets so you couldn't see them. It worked well. I was determined not to have outlets on my new fancy black splash.

If your outlets are above the backsplash then they must have moved the outlets all the way up the wall under the cabinets.

We currently have under cabinet lighting, but now the under cabinet outlet kits come with the option for integrated LED lighting as well.

Unfornetly no matter where the outlet is you will see cords. But at least I will not see the cord and the outlet.

Now that I think about it there is nothing plugged into any of the outlets currently in the kitchen......

So glad to see I"m not alone!

I thought it was a quirk only I had, but I can't stand cords and plugs. In all honesty even with really pretty outlet covers, I don't like the interruption outlets make in a wall, especially above the counter in the kitchen, but what to do, we have to be able to plug in appliances!

When I see rooms, one of the first things that jump out at me are the cords that show. I strive to hide mine, but sometimes you can only do so much.

Plus it is more expensive to cut those outlets into it and the chances of breaking the granite are increased. Like you, I had them mounted under the cabinets.

I'm very confused. You all are saying that you put your outlets up right under the upper cabinets, over the backsplash? I thought a backsplash goes right up to the cabinets. I have never seen outlets set up high. My backsplash is black subway tiles and my regularly placed outlets are virtually invisible.

I wish I would have thought of that when I redid my kitchen. I didn't do granite, but quartz. My backsplash goes all the way to the bottom of the upper cabinets. There are a bunch of ideas if you Google "hide your kitchen outlets". But you may not want to get into that expense.

Rather then moving the outlets to the top of the slab against the cabinets, I would install them horizontally along the very base of the slab where it meets the countertop. To me that would look less conspicuous. You would not see the cords of any appliance you leave out, like coffee maker, toaster.

They say for cleaning purpose and wet (spills etc) to NOT put outlets low in a kitchen or bath. It makes sense if you think about it or cook a lot in your kitchen.

We do not own a coffee maker and only plug a toaster in once in a blue moon if someone wants to toast a bagel. So I do not have to worry about the 'look' of cords

I only know one person who has it and she really likes it. They have them on almost all day every day and they have not had to replace a bulb yet and it has been 6 1/2 yrs.

Oh, I was thinking you were planning something different. This I definitely like! I wish it was available when I redid my kitchen 10 years ago.

@Abrowneyegirl I don’t have the light kit. My husband put round lights, like spotlights, under the cabinets and in the 3 glass cabinets on the peninsula that have doors on both sides. For outlets he wired them in the underneath of the cabinets.

We remodeled the kitchen ourselves although I mostly was just the help. The kitchen is small.
