my mom has a front load one its about 3 yrs old..she had some water leaking from i want to say the rubber part on the inside of the door when you open it.. this went on for awhile and she called them to ask them to come look at it... they told her water accumilates in the seal and that she should wipe it out after every load... thats probably where the smell is coming from water building up within or under the seal causing mold... just my guess but same problem with my moms. i also heard not to long ago to leave washer open afterwards to dry it out so that mold wont build up from the moisture which makes sense, i never thought of that............. but i personally like the top load ones

I have heard that is typical for the front loaders to smell. Many people have complained

about them. I have a top load machine, and don't have any kind of a problem like that with

it. I have always had top loaders my whole marriage ( 46 years last May ). When I get

another one, it will be a top loader also. Talk to the repair men at a few shops, and they

will give you some helpful information. Good luck!

I've never had a problem with my front loader Samsung washer with smelling. I follow the directions and after every 40 or so washings it notifies me to run its "pure cycle". That cycle cleans all the soap and gunk out of the washer.

I am using a front loader washer now in the rental I am in, but have a top loading washer at my house and prefer the top loader. Easier for me to load it instead of bending over for the front one. I leave the doors open on both so no funky smells

A lot of people in the past really regret their front loader purchases.

I think you have to ask yourself what your true needs are in a washer, and then address your wants.

I don't think you will really know if you like something new and different to you, until you live with it.

I know for me, I have definite criteria for a washer. Top loader, full fill and hot water cycles. with load size choices I make, not the machine based on weight of load. I don't need any bells and whistles, just the basics.

Your needs and wants will be different, but honestly a lot of what is available as options on cars, refrigerators, washers etc. is just more stuff to break and adds to the price, when something much simpler is just fine for our individual needs.

Try not to get caught up in all the glitz and glamor! LOL

I was not a front loader fan until I purchased my new set of Smsung washer/dryer. I needed something to hold king size bedding so that's what sold me. It's a pain to pull that bedding from the top of the washer. (I also wash queen size bedding and it's still a pain) Now that I have one I really like it. I did purchase the storage drawers for under both. It puts the washer and dryer at the proper height so I'm not twisting my back pulling jeans, etc from the unit. It also is a great place for storing laundry supplies.

I did check on the forum for suggestions before I purchased the ones I have and am a big Consurmer Reports fan. Speed Queen has the regular models and seem to be well liked and work well.

I think it depends on what you wash, how large are your loads and how often do you wash. The one feature that I have on mine is the "Pure Cycle" wear the machine cleans the inner drum after so many loads. I do find this feature to be a big plus. I have dogs so I'm also washing dog blankets. throw rugs, etc. I do wash out the washer with some bleach water but this extra feature really keeps every load from any transfer.

Decide on what features you need and those that would be a nice extra. Stick to yoiur budget to help you decide.

I read a LOT of consumer reports and reviews when I had to buy a new washer and dryer. I went with a top loader for two reasons - affordability and no reports of mildew.

I have a high efficiency top loader by LG. It has no agitator to worry about tearing anything and I've had no issues with it getting my clothes clean. I got mine over a 4th of July sale.

I love my top loader with an agitator. It is really huge and can fit quilts and large items. The agitator keeps it from going off balance and the clothing from tangling in the wash.

I like that I can open it during the wash cycle and add that one item I missed and it spin drys very well..actually it has a second spin cycle if needed for bulky items. It also adds enough water to cover and clean my clothing. It has an auto soak feature and thank goodness, no electronic buttons to go wrong and cost a fortune to repair.

I am 5'1" and can reach all the way to the bottom of the tub.

My old washer was almost 30 years old and I just knew I was going to hate the new ones.

Well, I was sure surprised. I love this new one. I just got in in November. It was a little less than $500... great price too.

it's a GE Deep Fill.

I choose to stick with top loading washers; multiple wash cycles, and definitely the full water fill feature. My current washer is a Whirlpool, nearly 2 years old, is used almost daily, and I’m very satisfied with it.

My previous washer was a front loading Bosch. I HATED that washer; it did not use enough water to clean our clothes. Very small loads did fine, but if you put in 4 pair of jeans, they would likely come out with dry spots on them that never got wet. I estimated that this washer used about 5 gallons of water on the wash cycle I used the most. At the end of every wash day, I took a Clorox wipe and cleaned under the door gasket to remove the dirt and soap scum buildup that caused the musty smell. I used a truckload of bleach cleaning this washer in the short time I had it. My last straw with this machine, was over the last item washed in it before it went to the recycling center. My daughter washed a new lightweight cotton shirt on a short cycle in this washer, and it was 5 hours of washing, rinsing, spinning, before I finally got the door latch to release to get the shirt out. I have nothing positive to say about my experience with this front loading washer.

Much of the nasty smell in the laundry room comes from the drain line from the washer. Dirt and soap scum builds in that drain line and sits between use. I pour straight peroxide into this drain line to help kill the scum and bacteria in that area.

I have an Electrolux front loading machine which I have had for years. Best washing machine I have ever owned. The dryer was awful so it’s been replaced, but the washer is amazing. I have had problems with the mildew smell even after running the necessary clean cycle when it prompts. Mildew collects in the door. I stopped using liquid HE detergent and went back to powder and the smell stopped and so did the buildup. And powder detergent, which I have not used in years, is actually cleaning my clothes better IMO.

When we moved to our “new” mid ‘50s ranch, the only type of machine that would fit in the only space in the house where it could go, was a front loader.

I’ve never loved any washing machine more. It’s the largest stackable LG.

Were I in the market, I'd only consider a top loading washer.
