This is unusual. You are saying the same spots come back in a few days, after you've had the carpet cleaned? The very same spots, or are you just saying different spots come up on the carpet in the same area? Sorry I just didn't understand that part.

Spotting can be caused by a number of things (ruling out pets of course). Coffee or tea drippings, it could be a leaky ceiling, or it could be splatters from pest control spraying if you have that done, sometimes that can spot and stain your carpet.

For what it's worth, a carpet tech told me, the more you clean a spot or your carpet, the spots return, he said that the soap which is used to clean the spot, acts as a magnet and the gumminess just attracts the lint, "dirt." I think this may be true, but it is only one opinion. Good luck with your spots!

I had new carpet put in about a year ago. Got a new puppy in October. Yes, these 2 things do NOT mix well. We'd been spot treating, but that only worked so long. Finally went to manufacturer's website. #1 rule they had was do not use hot water (steam) as it will set in stains.

Now I've had carpets cleaned over the years by Stanley Steamer, used the ones you rent, had a Hoover that used as HOT of water as possible, even got the Bissell that heats it's water. Stains ALWAYS came back. When I started thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Hot will set in stains on clothing, my mother always taught me to use cold 1st. Sent hubby to buy a cheap Hoover that didn't do anything except clean. Nothing fancy. Had good reviews.

I used pet stain remover from the pet store in cold water. 90% gone. I have one area that needs to be redone (right near edge of the bed, I think hubby missed it).

My mother had her carpets shampooed & steamed years back & this was always the case. For a good carpet, one stain will probably come out, but if you have old wall-to-wall which has seen a better day, the carpet cleaners may get it to look ok for a special occasion or holiday in your home, but the stains will reappear & the carpet will grab dirt quicker.

I found this to happen when I had a house full of wall to wall. The more I had it shampooed the more the same dirty areas came back and fast. I no longer have any wall to wall.

Isn't the stain coming back because of the pad underneath not getting the full benefit of the cleaner? Try Folex, I use it for pet stains.

Good luck with your spots!

If this were true, your entire carpet would be stained and spotty- not just where the spots were originally. I will agree don't use much soap- 2 drops of dawn in a gallon of water is plenty for most. We use pet cleaner, because of the puppy, but still only a tiny amount. Mainly because it's nearly impossible to get the soap out.

I have been using boiling hot water mixed with Oxiclean for years and it works for me with my two dogs and one cat. I pour it on the spot, let it set and then when it does its work, I blot it up over and over (I never, ever rub) and it works really well with no return of the spot later on.

Some carpet cleaners (some more than others!) leave detergent residue in the carpet, and it does attract dirt back very quickly after the carpets are cleaned. This is especially true with spots that have been heavily treated and the carpet heavily saturated with cleaner and then not adequately rinsed or steamed out. Some cleaners use low-residue cleaning processes, and you might check on some of those in your area.

I think it depends on what material your carpet is made from. I had polyester carpet in my home 2 yrs ago that looked dirty all the time. A salesman told me that some berber is made from oil based products and once you get a stain on it the oil absorbs the stain and you won't get it out. I now have tight woven nylon, off white, and it cleans like a charm with only hot water. But I spray Scotch Guard on it after cleaning.

When I had wall to wall carpet w/ four pets, I was shampooing constantly. I did use hot water, but I learned that it's very important to "rinse" (thus, going over the carpet w/ clear water at least once) after shampooing. As other posters mentioned, leftover soap w/ attract dirt to the previously soiled areas and around and around and around we go.
