If I was ACTUALLY ever going to use it, I would keep 8 place settings,

No need to concern yourself with how many settings are left to donate.

I am not sentimental about chine - it’s dishes.

Looking for votes or suggestions.

I have my parents wedding china and DH and I are looking to downsize.

We have no one to leave the china to and no one in the family wants it.

So my compromise was that we keep a complete place-setting for 7. We never have more than 6 guests at a time for a sit down meal and if we do- "oh well"

My thought was we will have 6 placesettings with one extra of everything in case of breakage.

The rest we donate.

Some say keep it all or donate it all. Thoughts?

When was it last used?

I ditched my own china and many other table settings two moves ago Never looked back.

My sister has (had?) my grandparents' Limoges. No one has ever seen it. My mother kept it boxed for years as she had her own pattern. Her father was an importer. Mom gave it to my sister, who never cooks and never had a dining room. She sells on the bay all the time, so the china might be long gone.

Anyway, my suggestion would be to keep one place setting IF you have some place to display and enjoy it on a daily basis. If not, take pictures and let it go. If in perfect condition you MIGHT be able to sell it. Have you looked into replacements.com to sell?

I know what you are going through. I say donate it all. One less thing to deal with and worry about.

I have about 10 Rubbermaid tubs of crystal, china, handpainted dishes and glass dishes from my Mom. I used to donate to a local store that employed the homeless and all proceeds went to the homeless, Well, the store and it contents went to Sheriff Sale about 3 months ago.

And even Goodwill was not accepting donations when I last went there.

I have my own china, crystal and Lenox that I no longer use. So I don't have the option to donate. And yes I looked into Replacements. They offered me $1 for a solid sterling silver knife or serving spoon. I forget what they offered for the other spoons and forks. Not worth the postage. Hate to see it melted down. It is a pretty pattern.

I would keep it and I would use it often, not, just, "special" occasions especially if you like it. I have my grandmother's china, service for 12. I use it all the time and get tremendous joy from it. As a child, all my birthdays were with this china as well as every single holiday. Brings back so many wonderful memories. I was determined to make use of this and not save it, I wanted the enjoyment of it. I have her silver as well which I use every single day and yes, I put it in the dishwasher, too. Yes, the china is on the formal side but that doesn't matter to me, I've even used it for a regular family dinner during the week because I wanted something pretty on the table. But I am attached and very sentimental, so I couldn't bear the thought of selling it to strangers. No, I don't worry if something breaks because with service for 12, there is plenty left over and no, nothing has broken in all these years even though I put it in the dishwasher as well!

How many servings do you have for the full set?

I would keep at least service for 8. Seven is an odd number. If need to donate it or sell it in the future, at least you have 8, which is what most sets come in anyway.

Get rid of all the glassware and other pieces you don't want or need.

Do you enjoy and use it now? If not, I would donate. If you do choose to keep some pieces for yourself and are donating, it will not matter to people if it’s an odd number or a full set.

ETA: I just read your most recent reply. I would definitely not keep it, but donate or try to sell. When possessions start to feel like obligations, I think it’s time to let them go.

I don't know how old you are which makes a difference in my answer. If you are under 35, keep it all for at least 10 more years and USE it when you can. If you are over 45, donate it all. Your lifestyle and tastes are pretty much set and if you don't like it or use it now, you probably never will.

Will you actually use any of the dishes or will you just store them? I say keep a select few pieces and donate the rest. And use it right now !!! Why save it for just certain occasions . And I disagree about people wanting to buy a full set of dishes only---maybe someone needs only a plate or 2. I have Princess House crystal dinnerware that I never use and will be donating soon. My BF sold her moms china and got a few hundred $ for the set.

I am sorry that no one in your family wants it. I am so sentimental, I would not be able to give it up in my lifetime. I also understand the need to downsize. How about keeping two place settings? You and your husband can use it on occasion, it wouldn't take up too much room, and you would still have something to remind you of your mom and the memories of the occasions the china was used. The rest could be consigned, sold, donated--your choice.

If you really want to keep some of it, Then do that. If you don't like,it or will not use it, sell it.

For the pieces you don't want or need, I'd check with Replacements, LTD either by phone or via their website.

They buy most good used China. People who are looking for replacement pieces will appreciate the chance to complete their much loved settings.

@drizzellla , the price for real sterling silver! My MIL was a dishes nut. When I moved to our retirement home, we did a fragile pack meaning the movers packed dishes, art, mirrors, etc. They said they had never seen so many dishes. I have since gotten rid of a lot.

My MIL had a large silver bowl that Birk’s appraised at $5,000 30 years ago. The one thing I didn’t want from her estate was dishes lol. LM
