Personally, I would find it more eye-pleasing with the middle one to the right. A lot could hinge on how the rest of the room is set up. In other words, are you trying to get people to move their eyes from left to right, or from right to left? I think the natural flow is from left to right. I also would not space them the exact distance apart......I'd have the middle one a little to the right or the left. Just look at it when you're done, and you'll know if it's right!

On 3/17/2014 whitelinen said:
tips

Thanks for that link whitelinen but it did not really address my question. I'm wondering about the set of 3 VPH spheres. If the larger one is in the back should the medium size be on the left or the right of the largest one? That leaves the smallest size to be placed in the open spot on the ""triangle"" so to speak.

I don't think it makes any difference. Do whatever pleases your eye. You should not have to rely on a ""rule"" for every phase of your decorating. Your house will look like an unlived in model home.

This photo from VPH shows my question. I see Valerie puts the middle size to the left of the largest sphere which is what I usually do, but I think I heard a decorator say once, that it should be just the opposite. Not sure?

To my eye, it would depend on where you are placing the display. If you're placing it on a mantel or a buffet type table and placing it to one side or the other, I would place the smallest sphere on the inside of the grouping. To have the smaller sphere on the outside edge would cause your eye to drop off rather than be drawn in to the display.

I would put the medium size to the right of the largest item, if I were only using three items. If using more than three and the three items are same shape you might need to add another item or put something on a riser.

I'm not thinking there's a hard and fast rule. It depends on what else is part of the vignette and where it's placed. I've always found that rules aside, I just have to play with these kinds of things to find the configuration that most pleases me.

I don't know if I qualify as an "expert", but I think the answer to this question depends on the situation -- the objects you're working with, where you're putting them, what else may be near them, and how the arrangement looks. Color, size, balance, and rhythm all figure into it. I just play with the placement of items till the arrangement looks "right" to me. I don't think there's a fixed rule.

Hi mallemo,

Well, I am probably a little late and a little short but what I have done with my green ones for the time being is I have the big and middle in the back with the big on the left and then put the small in front of the other 2. I am sure not the best layout but at this point it is working for me.

My amber ones I have the big one sitting on the table and have the middle one on a candle pedestal and the smaller on a taller pedestal. And those of back and off to the side of the big one. With the middle one being on the left. I originally had them all sitting on the table and then moved them to the pedestals. Like both ways.

I am sure you have come up with something great by now and it looks fantastic. Enjoy your spheres.

JPC
