I am considering a 12 x 24 vinyl tile for my laundry room. It gets constant foot traffic and dirt because of the entryway off the garage. The laundry room is sandwiched between the garage entryway and the kitchen. We have hardwood in the kitchen. The room is roughly 50 square feet. Any advice from the decorators out there on the size of tile? Is a 12 x 24 tile too big for a small room?

I don’t think so. Why don’t you buy five or six tiles and lay them on the floor so you can decide for yourself. Most big box stores will let you return the tiles if they doesn’t work for you.

I like the larger tile in a neutral color. I think it will make a small space look larger. If it were me in a large traffic area I would pick either a light sand or light grey color. I'm not sure if you have windows or what the wall color and how much is actually exposed but you might be able to use a dark slate grey tile on the floor. Usually you can get a samples to bring home and stare at for a few days. If that is not an option then just purchase one 4x4" ceramic tile in a few colors and use that. It's an inexpensive way to avoid a bigger mistake. I actually think that when it comes to a mud room that you have more options with color, etc. No matter what you pick it seems to work with the room and blend a bit better than first thought. Don't stress! Go with a color that you like if you can't decide.

You can buy single tiles at Home Depot/Lowes, if you want to buy a few in different sizes to see how they look.

You can probably return them when you are done with your experiment.

We had either 12 x 12 or 14 x 14 tile on the laundry "room" (hall) between the garage and the house and it was beautiful! It made that area look so much bigger.

A friend who was a decorator told me to do that and I was shocked (that was a long time ago) but it worked out great. Just be sure the tiler makes the whole tile down the walkway area of the "room".
