I only use quilts on my bed, cotton ones. I never use comforters because most of them are poly fill. Quilts are my bedding and when I wake up I smooth them out and have a pretty bed. My dogs sleep with me but I lay a towel down for them and then just throw it in the wash when needed.

I just ordered this a couple days ago because I am getting away from the burgundy and gold in my bedroom.

Good Morning Ladies,

I am in my late 60's and recently moved, we purchased a king size bed so there would be more room for our 2 cocker spaniels to sleep. I am so undecided about decorating the bed. I bought a comforter but rarely put it on the bed it is so heavy, I don't feel like making the bed most days and putting on all the pillows. Am I just lazy or is this normal?

What's the difference how the room is decorated if you don't make the bed? I like to have a comforter on the bed because it is easier to make the bed than a bedspread.

Our shepherd had never been on our bed. I don't think she minds. That said I would never use a comforter that wasn't machine washable. Ours is a gorgeous Ralph Lauren Nanking design and use that blue and white oriental motif throughout the room and bath. With crisp white sheets---our bed looks pretty even when it's unmade.

When we switched from a Queen to King beg, I gave up on "comforters" because the size and weight was just too much for me to clean as often as I wanted to. We have 5 cats and at any given time, at least one or two get on the bed.

With two pups, I'm sure you will have the same issues. What's the point of a big, beautiful comforter if the animals are flopping around on it anyway?

What I did do is switch over to a lightweight bedspread that can be easily laundered. Right now, I'm using a brick red seersucker spread with navy sheets. I rarely "make" my bed, but straighten out the covers when we rise.

Our bedroom is not fancy or frilly, but with lots of windows and a fireplace, I have enough going on without too many "trimmings." I have a lot of windows and lovely Victorian style furniture with my poster bed, and a traditional oriental on the floor.

Make it easy on yourself and keep it simple!

If you don't need the comforter for warmth, I wouldn't out it on. In the winter, I need a comforter. I straighten it out, so the bed has the illusion that it's made. In warmer months, I use a colorful quilt. The room is painted a seafoam color. I have a quilt that has lots of color, one being seafoam.

I do not take my comforter off our king bed every night, I simply fold it down several times and leave it on the very end, then fold it back when I make the bed. Our dog does not lay on the comforter, she is usually on the top blanket when we get ready for bed. If you do not want a lot of fancy pillows, you certainly do not need them. Find a comforter with shams you love, it will look beautiful. Its your room, you should do whatever you want!

By comforter, I don't know if you mean a down comforter or a heavy cotton comforter. You could buy a lightweight down comforter in a color and then pull it up and the bed is made. Don't have dogs, but there's usually a pile of cats with us, ha, ha.

I have a beautiful bedspread under my blankets. It has never seen the light of day because of my animals through the years. I bought an electric blanket for my senior dog this year and use other fluffy blankets. When I last pet is gone, I don't plan on getting another one. Mine live so long, which is a blessing but I am not that young anymore.

One of these days I will have a beautiful bedroom set and the bedspread will look brand new but I am certainly not in any hurry, I can wait. I would rather have my dog on the bed and the other 4 pets I use to have.

We have a king size bed also. I hate making the bed too but I do it. I have a comforter with our regular pillows we sleep with, 2 pillows with shams & 3 throw pillows. I did not put the dust ruffle on the bed. I left it off so you could see the wood frame that goes around the bed. I fold the comforter down onto the footboard at night. We don't use it to cover up with. I stack the pillows up in front of the closest doors. If I don't make the bed you cannot get in the closet. LOL!!! Other then the comforter & sheets we use an electric blanket in the winter & a light weight cotton blanket the rest of the year. It's easy to make & only takes 5 mins or so. I'm kind of a clean freak so I could not stand it if I left the bed not made.

Just wanted to add that Orvis carries lovely seersucker bedspreads at a reasonable price.

I have at least 6 (some solid, some stripes) and also use them on the king bed in our small bed and breakfast. I wash everything on that bed every time anyone visits. Bedspreads are getting easier to find, but still it's a challenge finding one that isn't all fluffy and floral. These are just plain, large scale seersucker that wears like iron and looks good on the bed.

Also, I bought cheaper poly/cotton quilts and use THOSE for blankets rather than a traditional woven blanket. They are a perfect year around weight without being so heavy.

As I said, my bedding is laundered often (probably weekly) especially in the winter when my kitty boys are lounging around on it. I pull the bedspread up over my quilt and sheet and they lay on the spread. That way, their hair doesn't get down into the part where I'm sleeping.

Long ago, I had beautiful, puffy, comforters that I finally gave away. Yes, they were pretty, but I'm too much of a clean freak to let them go without washing.

On 3/8/2014 Witchy Woman said:
When we switched from a Queen to King beg, I gave up on "comforters" because the size and weight was just too much for me to clean as often as I wanted to. I slept nights, my husband slept days (because of his work schedule), and it seemed that the room was never done up. It drove me crazy!

I don't care for the bedspread look, but it does make life much easier, and gives you a clean finished look very quickly, with little effort. Comforter sets and quilt sets usually require extra pillows, shams etc. to complete the look. Skip all the decorative pillows and stuff they try to sell you in the magazines if you find it bothersome, because clean lines and simplicity are just as attractive.

Quilts and shams are really easy for me, and give me the look I want. I ditched the comforter thing years ago as well.

I had overdecorated my bedroom at one time, and have been removing stuff slowly over time. The bedroom is the dustiest room in our house, and it was too much work to clean all the stuff every week as the dust piled up. I'm liking it better the more stuff I move out.

This is only a suggestion, and I know some folks would never hear of it, but my mom used to let her Pug sleep with her, then had an hour every day cleaning the bed. If the dogs in the bed are part of the problem with getting things done, perhaps getting them their own beds would help make the processes easier, and allow you to have more on the bed that you would enjoy. We had a small dog in the bed with us years ago, and when she was gone, the new one never made it there, but has his own bed next to ours. I'd never go back to animals in the bed again, and not because I think it is dirty or anything like that. I just know how much work it eliminated, how much better I sleep without them in the bed, and they seem to like having their own space. If you can't consider this now, maybe for pets in the future, start out different and see if it works for you or makes a difference in how you feel about your bed.

My BR is my office. I have not bothered "decorating" it. My music is in here, my TV, my computer, my Kindle, all of my books and crossword puzzles. My LR is used for when my kids and grandkids come over, and sometimes a friend or two. I did put my favorite paintings up, but that's it. (I don't like the look of plain walls, it makes the room feel like it's closing in on me.)

Except for eating and using the bathroom, this apartment could be 300 sq. ft instead of 600 sq. ft., and I wouldn't be missing anything.

I make the bed every day. It only takes a few minutes. I can't imagine walking into my bedroom and seeing a messy, unmade bed.

No offense to pet owners, but I can't imagine sleeping with pets. That kind of skeeves me out.
