LONG story short........

We painted an unfinished wood door and did not prime it first. (!!!!) (or should I say SOMEONE did not prime it first.)

2 coats of navy satin paint later it looks good, no brush strokes or anything but it feels rough and the sheen is not as satin as I would like.

We lightly sanded and clened between coats but ugh it is still rough to me.

My thought is at this point is to sand it more than lightly and put on a 3rd coat.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. YES I know the door should have been primed first!

Yes...I think you will need to sand it again. Most likely you should use two different grits of sandpaper because you are still feeling the rough wood. Then paint another coat of paint. You may need to add two coats of paint depending on how the sanding project results. Once it's done then it's done for good. At least that's what I told myself with my project.

I think you should consider the two coats of paint you've already used as the primer.

Sand it again and paint it.

Aura by Benjamin Moore has a paint made for doors. I've never used it, but it might give you better coversage.

That's exactly what I would do...

Sand with a little heavier sandpaper, then again with a lighter sandpaper (making sure you completely wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove all the sawdust before repainting)....

Paint another coat, then you will probably have to lightly sand again after it's dry, depending on the feel and sheen you want......Good Luck with your project!

Did you sand and clean off before you put the first coat on so you started with a smooth surface? I always sand bare wood and clean prior to any finishes being applied. Also, be sure you used the right finish so you have the sheen you want. If you purchased SW they are great at giving you adivice.
