My house is carpet, tile and hardwood. The hardwood in the dining room is beautiful and was installed 20+ years ago and we could never replace it for what it cost then.(i found the bill is was $200.00 for the product, my DH and a friend installed it).

A friend of mine in Florida pulled up all the carpet and put in tile, she likes it but says that noise is terrible, especially when the TV is on another friend that is a contractor put the vinyl planks (similar to an earlier post) in the kitchen. I am a bit snooty and was shocked to learn it was a vinyl plank, it was very pretty!

In my bath we put in a grouted, tile floor that 'floated' above the old floor, it is also very nice. I went that way so that the we did not have to put in a new sub floor, it was a quick installation (by a professional).

If you were building a new home, what type of flooring would you choose to go with, in kitchen, dining rom & baths? We'd want to tile our shower in master bath. Please give examples of what you have or don't have... likes or dislikes... We really are at odds which way to turn. Can we change out after we tile? TIA!!!

For the ceramic tile floor, just any cleaner....even windex! If I had any idea how easy it would be to take care of, I would have had it put in the entire downstairs instead of regular hardwood!

The Travertine, we clean with a stone cleaner once a month. Be sure whoever installs it seals it, then it's a snap to take care of!

I am not a fan of hard tile floors. We have ceramic tile here in our kitchen, baths and entrances and I don't like it at all. If you drop anything it gets shattered because the floor is so hard or if the item is actually harder than the floor it chips the tile. It is also hard to stand on for very long. It's just like walking on concrete. I have never been a fan of carpet due to the issues of having to clean it. Though carpet does make a home quieter as it absorbs noise. In our camper we have vinyl wood plank flooring. I absolutely love it. It looks exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) like wood but has all the ease of care and lack of being terribly expensive of a vinyl floor. it is a softer surface and absorbs noise. Looks beautiful. I would love to rip up the carpet in my house and replace it with vinyl wood plank , but my DH has neuropathy and he wants carpet.

We have laminate from Costco, Harmonics I think it is called. After 7 years it still looks good with a dust mop and Swiffering. I use the Swiffer with the pad, not the one with the solution tank. I think the risk with that is getting too much liquid on it.

I'm liking some of the newer faux woods that literally 'click' into place. They really look like wood but with all the easy-care advantages of vinyl. They seem to be more durable than vinyl, and while I like stone, slate, marble, etc., they are very hard, unforgiving, crack and cold on the feet.
