I've never been interesting in a log home but I had the opportunity a few years ago to tour Barbara Mandrell's home outside of Nashville, which is a beautiful log home built in the 1980s, I think. Her husband wanted it and he designed most of it. Personally, I prefer something more cozy.

Our first home was a log cabin that my husband built on 5 acres of land in a rural community. He did it all (with the exception of the foundation, the plumbing and the electrical) with the help of two really great friends. Our local newspaper did a story on him! We lived in it for a couple of years before he joined the military and we moved ( a lot!). It was beautiful. I could see over time though that all of the wood inside might get monotonous. We still stop by and see it whenever we visit our hometown.

I love beautiful wood but those houses are too much. There's no place for the eye to pause and rest. Also these homes are supposed to be very high maintenance, requiring frequent adjustment and upkeep on the logs.

When I was living and working in a major metro city I'd brainstorm with a co worker about how to escape city life and head North.

We chatted about the respective log homes in our future. He wanted full log and I settled for a kit due to costs.

While we both achieved the goal of ditching city life, after much research we both ditched the log home idea. Too much upkeep. He was heading for retirement and I work too many hours for one to be practical.

There was a time when a log home had a certain appeal for me, but I don't think it any longer does... Had I still an interest, I think the charm of a log cabin is that is isn't steeped in 'luxury'...

Log home was a dream of mine years ago. Now, I wouldn't mind IF it had a more modern vibe; i.e., lots of natural light, mostly open floor plan, pops of color on the walls since I wouldn't want 100% of the interior walls to show all logs only.

Too much of the same color wood and my first thought was ---how in blue blazes would you dust all those nooks and crannies--no thanks

We stayed at a luxury log cabin in the Smokies. It was beautiful.

All the wood was starting to get on my nerves though - wood floor, wood floor, wood ceiling...it was just too much wood after a while.

When you're in a rustic setting, it just seems natural to be in a log cabin. It was okay for a short time, but I couldn't live in one.

I LOVE the circular staircase in picture number one!!

I also love the 4th picture in the same grouping. There is a lot of light in the living room and I can see the water. Lovely.

As others have stated, the upkeep on a log home is too much...but I do like parts of these homes...the parts I mentioned.

Go buy some lottery tickets...because "Hey, you never know!!"

There is a log home across the road from our home. It was built probably 40 years ago. The original structure was a square with a loft and basement. When our neighbors purchased it they did add an additional room on the first floor and a wrap around porch. The only thing I found unpleasant about it was the kitchen. It is rather dark inside but that is because it sits in the middle of the woods.

I've seen some on HGTV specials that are made of wood, stone, and different materials. It breaks up all the wood and looks much better than all wood. I've stayed in one and it was so noisy. The wood is always making noises. I guess they do that or so I've been told.

DD owns a log cabin in NC. It is not a true log cabin so it is not high maintenance. Hers appears to be a true log cabin and she had it built for that look. True log cabins are built of logs only and the “mortar” between them. That can require some maintenance but nothing prohibitive. I love the knotty pine walls in a cabin but the ceiling must be soaring or it can really feel closed in. We looked at buying a log cabin for a rental...it was beautiful until we went inside.....drywall! Why would anyone do that?
