These fireplaces are beautiful room focal points. When I was a kid, we had a full-wall reddish brick fireplace. It had several sections to it so we could cook food in the built-in grill, make popcorn, cook in a black pot that swung out, etc., or just enjoy the beauty and coziness of a fire. The wall continued to the lower level/basement, but this one was made of lannon stone and fit into the more modern look there. The fireplaces were wonderful at gathering the family and friends.

My home doesn't have one, but growing up we always opened Christimas presents on the floor in front of my grandmother's fireplace. With the mantle decorated so lovely. Nice memories.

Around here the trend is an outdoor fireplace. New houses are having one added to screened in porch or one in the middle of the back yard.

I love the beauty of natural brick or stone and I admire the skill of a mason to craft such great pieces.

I absolutely cringe when flipper shows destroy the beauty and craftsmanship to "modernize" the fireplace by painting over brick or worse yet, removing all traces of the original workmanship and replacing it with some faux facade and adding a mantle of man made materials.

Those are all so beautiful. Our new house doesn’t have a fireplace. I will miss that so much, especially at Christmas. We have always had a fireplace in all our homes up until now.

I have to say that I am not a fireplace fan at all--none of them impress me--I think they are huge waste of money and space---I have one that we never use and that is ugly anyway and wish to the house buliding gods, that I never agreed to one---however---I would totally go for one that was gas and could be used without the mess. Ours is plumbed for gas, I think, but after 32 years, I'm sure there would be substantial cost in re -vamping it to gas. I'd rather have the space it takes up------

Sorry, but this thread is just cruel.

I have always had beautiful fireplaces, my last house was my favorite.

I've been here with no fireplace for 25 years now, and I miss it every day of my life (the decorating options alone make it a 'must have' for me).

So this thread is just mean. LOL

@Mominohio ya know if you install that woodburning fireplace you'll have the perfect fuel source when you take down the trees 😉

I've also looked at this for the new build. It's an Amish Rock Ledge fireplace. There are a couple of options for the brick and you can ger a propane insert.

Some are just plain ugly or nothing special, like in tract homes, no matter the age. I don't mind an update in those situations, but if you go "modern", you will probably always need to do updates. At least do it correctly with quality products that will stand the test of time. You are right that some so-called "improvements" destroy the fireplace.

What I can't stand is seeing wood burning fireplaces being ruined to install gas fireplaces. They are not the same thing. I need the crackle of the fire, and there is something about throwing another log on the fire to keep it going. Wood burning firplaces are getting harder to find in California, and are on the wish list of many buyers. Despite all the regulations we have to follow, I would never give mine up.

As long as it is a real wood burning fireplace I am great with it. I don't care what it looks like.

For the first time since 2002 we have a real fireplace. Not a tacky electric, gas, propane , sparkley, turns multi colors, whatever else they call a fireplace. A real one and I'm in heaven.

I don't mind setting it up although DH does it. I don't mind cleaning it out. I don't mind buying the wood. It is real and that's all that matters.

@Mominohio,

My mom put up one of those cardboard fireplaces of the 1960's when we were kids. So you can still have one and pretend it is real ...as I use to do LOL
