Bathroom Renovation

This is regarding tub, shower, and toilet color. I want a dark gray but my husband keeps saying it will show too much water spots and it will be harder to clean. Do you have something of this color and do you like it?

Love the color. And some years back we installed this color sink in our bathroom.

I do think your husband is right......while sinks are a bit different (toopaste, etc), I will say that the dark bowls/tubs are likely to show spots and stuff much more than the traditional white.

We have hard water so water spots on darker colors would be very bad, a NEVER ending battle.

Personally, I would go with white fixtures and do gray as accents - shower curtain, towels, rugs, wallpaper, etc.

@lil punkit I agree. We had a sink this color once, and while it was pretty, it showed everything, and it even had a speckle in it. Hate to say it, but DH may be right on this one.......sorry......

I agree, I think this, while gorgeous, will show every water spot, it will be a never ending battle. I love it though, but would not go with that color. Sorry.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd stick with a white or biscuit colored tub and bring the grey in somewhere else - paint, shower curtain, towels, etc. We're redecorating our 3/4 bath soon too and also like grey. I'm painting the wall cabinet, medicine cabinet, and vanity in a lightish grey but the shower and toilet will remain and they're both a pale biscuit color. In your situation, when grey isn't so on trend and popular, you'll be stuck with the tub and likely end up sorry and start looking for someone to paint it. Back in the mid 50's/early 60's, there was a peachy pink color that was very popular in bathroom fixtures. When DH and I bought our first home in the mid-80's, the bathroom had the peach pink tub and toilet. One of the first things we did was contract with some bathtub refinishers to paint the tub white and we bought a new white toilet. The prior owner had already replaced the sink with white. Granted, you may not even remain in the home for 25 yrs., but you get my drift.

@makena ~ I like the color, but it's certainly something to think about (spotting, soap residue) on a dark color, especially if you have hard water. A previous poster mentioned use gray accents, with shower curtain, towels, mats, counter items. You can also do

a great dark gray trim on the shower walls and around tub area. I think going neutral in the bathroom gives you the flexibility of using a plethora of colors whenever you want a change.🌈

I think it will make your bathroom look small. It's a trendy color which you might not like later. If you chose white you could accent (towels, paint, etc.) with different colors and then change it out when you get tired. Have you seen this color in a bathroom showroom?

I love it! Grey is THE color now, but eventually it will...

I love it! Grey is THE color now, but eventually it will look dated. I would stick with white and do paint, fixtures, and furnishings in grey. It will be beautiful!

My home was built in 1981 when Harvest Gold was popular. The color lost popularity in kitchens and baths very quickly, but we had to live with those bath fixtures until 2007. I replaced with white, and will never fall for a "popular color" in anything that major, ever again!

I've had a dark blue tiled shower and it was a nightmare to keep clean. Every dried drop of water and residue from cleaners stood out like a sore thumb.

@makena I agree with white tub, etc and use gray as accents. Rule of thumb: keep big ticket items neutral for resale value.

I looked at that color when I was considering new fixtures for the bath. What I concluded is, I might consider a fixture or two, but not an entire suite.

I ended up with Toto "bone" for new thrones. I did alot of looking and I think, for me, an entirely matching aspect isn't what I'm after. (love my Promenades).

Don't know what direction I'll head when the sink/tub issue gets addressed. Could be interesting!

I had a bathroom remodel and had black counter tops with white sinks. Love the white sinks but the black color has to be cleaned constantly... waterstains, toothpaste and every other stain shows up. I would go light in I had it to do over again.

When we were picking out everything for our cottage we built 3 years ago we chose a glossy black shower pan. Our rep really advised against that color and tried to talk us into traditional white. Nope, we went with the black that went so well with our bathrooms white and black retro tile. We've never regretted it. We have hard water too and all we do is wipe it down, walla, clean!

I'm with the majority on this one.

I think it is way too trendy, and will be a regretted decision one day, especially when it comes time to sell the property.

I can't imagine it will be easy to keep pristine looking, and will darken the room and make it look smaller.

When it comes to tubs, sinks and toilets, I think these designers keep trying to reinvent the wheel, and it just isn't necessary or a good thing.

@ID2 did you just have the black shower pan or did you have a tub and shower walls the same color?

I'm gearing up for a large master bathroom renovation. Grey is the most popular color now and it's every where in stores. I have that color in my bathroom now and it's too much....too dark, too hard to clean and even when you clean it, it doesn't look clean enough. I'm going lighter and brighter. I agree with other posters, stick with whites and beiges for fixtures and add a slpah a color in other ways such as tile, vanities and paint. The grey vanities are beautiful. I plan on using that in a second bathroom.

Honestly, I loved the color. I know, deciding color is a big task. I am also renovating my bathroom and we have discussed all the renovation details with professionals. I will ask them if dark gray color will be suitable or not.

I will soon post pictures of my renovated bathroom.

Excited for the renovation.
