I am shocked what mattress & furniture stores charge for delivery considering I'm already spending big $$$ on purchasing.

We are purchasing a Cal King & Queen beds. My first surprise was boxsprings are "additional $200-350". I haven't bought bedding in years but isn't the boxspring necessary -- they say I can use the one I have.

Then I was going to purchase the server for my DR, and headboard for queen (downsizing from CA King which is to big for guest room).

Every store I've looked have delivery fees from $100-200 ...and I was surprised some fees are based on # of pieces you buy. For instance the one store was flat $150 delivery fee yet another store charged flat $100 for 1st piece & $50 each additional piece.

When I bought my den furniture they didn't charge delivery but I'm sure it was figured into the price since it was from a "high end" store.

Is this the norm nowadays? It's ridiculous when how else would the average customer get it home!

You haven't purchased new furniture in decades. We drove a 67 VW Convertible and a 65 VW Karma Ghia prior to our marriage for ease of parking on campus! Not very convenient when beginning to set up a household.

Mattresses and box springs have always been two seperate purchases as far as I know. We bought our first queen sized set in March, 1969 before we were married. It was custom-made for the firmness we wanted. My in-laws (to be) had just purchased a new set and loved theirs. It was an excellent bed and we bought from the same company about 12 years later to replace our original bedding, as well as to buy our son his first queen bed. We paid for one delivery and set-up fee each time. (Since then, we''ve paid seperate delivery fees with another company for queen beds.)

We also purchased a washer and dryer. The matching set was, of course, individually priced . . . and individually charged for delivery and set-up in March, 1969 from a local appliance store.

BTW: Are you aware it is recommended to replace mattresses (and I replace box springs, too) every 10-15 years? You'll be much healthier on a fresh, clean, new mattress! ENJOY.

You all shop at the wrong stores! I've never had to pay to have a bed delivered! Buy from a reputable store and they will deliver them for free AND take away your old bed. Cha Ching!

I'd say it's pretty typical, based on my experience, on both sides of that equation. For the consumer, it's a one-time fee. For the merchant, it's an on-going expense, to own and maintain delivery trucks, and to pay qualified delivery drivers and labor.

Moving that stuff around takes time ($$$) and strong backs ($$$ and you are lucky to find them!). Other equipment (forklifts, etc).

From a liability and accounting standpoint, most of the time materials and labor are kept separately, for a whole host of tax/labor/insurance laws. It's all planned for "transparency".

Enjoy your new furniture!

There are very few furniture stores in my area that have free deliver, mostly the expensive ones with good quality furnishings.

We found a local(ish) store that we have bought most our furniture from for about 30 years now, that offers free shipping and the best service department ever.

I know the shipping is built into the prices, it has to be. But they carry excellent quality brands, free delivery (and I think we have to live at least 50 miles from the place) and set up, in home service and pick up if anything is wrong for free.....We just pretty much gave up looking anywhere else and have stayed with them because of it.

Last year I bought a Queen sized-mattress and box-spring --- priced together. I bought from a local mattress store - and had free delivery. I paid $1,000. I guess if I spent $500, they would charge for delivery.
