Has anyone ordered from Ikea online and been successful?

My mother placed an order with Ikea a few months ago and decided to pay the $29 delivery charge to make it easy since the store was an hour away (Orlando). After a month plus of waiting and several phone calls with the outside vendor delivery service, she was so frustrated she cancelled the order.

We ended up going to my local Ikea (Atlanta) last weekend while she was up which is also about a 30-45 minute drive and found what I think is a perfect tv stand and entertainment center for me but they didn't have one piece in stock yet and I have a very small car. Also not sure I could carry and load some of the pieces myself even if they could fit. They are a bit much for one person.

I could probably get a family member at some point to drive down and help me but has anyone had any issue with Ikea delivering? Just wondering if my mother's experience was a rare event and I should just spend the $39 for delivery to myself.

For me the charge always stops me. I can make a daytrip to a local one. It is nice to see the product too.

The assembly is what turns me off...if it has to be assembled I am out.

My brother purchased a sofa table with shelves and doors that did not come assembled and it never closed properly and still is wobbly.

He should have returned it.

@Still Raining We saw it. I just didn't have the room in my car to take home. I am not a big one for spending extra money either. I just went online and there are hundreds of people with the same complaint/trouble my mom had. They never got their stuff either.

I think I just answered my own question and I'll hold off until someone with a bigger car and two more arms can help me out.

@Laura14 I have had a few things delivered including a sofa and it has always been perfect. Since you have seen the TV stand in person I would have it delivered. Those boxes are heavy for one person.

Te your mom to contact Ikea and explain what happened with the delivery company. They will make it right with her. I love their customer service.

Enjoy your new stuff if you decide to get it.

I've read all kinds of negative experiences with Ikea delivery. They use an outside service so I think your experience will vary depending on how good the outside service is in your area. The biggest complaint is that neither Ikea nor the delivery service holds themselves responsible for fulfillment so you can't get tracking to know when the item will be delivered and the delivery date may change without warning. Delays seem common. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

Based on experience I will say this to anyone buying furniture from IKEA that needs any kind of assembling even if it's only 4 screws. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! Prepare to swear....a lot.

I have quite a few things from Ikea and with the exception of one leg on a bench I've been quite successful at assembly. I just need to get it home. LOL

I recently bought some smaller things (cushions, pillows) using IKEA's "buy online" button on the website. So the IKEA site operates just like a regular online retailer now, but not all products are available this way. It comes FEDEX for me, NOT a third party shipper.

So I did place a huge furniture order with IKEA 4 years ago and it came via a third party shipper. No problems at all.

IKEA assembly is not as difficult as everyone makes it sound. First, sort all of the screws, pegs etc. I use plates and bowls to sort everything. Have a small electric drill with changeable bits. IKEA sells its own electric drill set - and I recommend it. SECRET to assembling IKEA furniture is...a rubber mallet.It allows you to fully secure a piece of wood to another without damaging it. Sometimes you have to tap the pieces together so they will lock. I have assembled everything: 8 beds, 5 dressers, 5 desks, tables, cabinets, benches. Not once was there a problem with the materials or directions. Read the directions from start to finish before beginning assembly. Lay out the boards and look at them. Make sure you know which sides are which. Assembling on carpeting or a rug is best.

Another nice tip for IKEA dressers, consoles is to take the top measurements to a glass supplier and ask them to make a glass top. This will prevent the IKEA particle board from showing wear quickly. And it upgrades the piece. I bet you could get the glass in black or other colors too.

@Laura14. @Little Way Just shy of a year ago I ordered a full size sofa couch, two beds (one that was a trundle type) and a decorative shelf from Ikea, along with lamps from their Maryland location. Used their deliverey system and had no problem whatsover with it coming on the date they stated--a Saturday. I had just relocated and did not bring any old, tired, mismatched furniture with me to the new DC rental rowhouse and Ikea was great for my budget. The couch and beds are in great shape and the couch especially gets heavy usage.

The two delivery men were very polite and even brought the beds upstairs for me and were pleased with the tip I gave them, and I was pleased with Ikea.

The observations that DM made are very good ones. I had purchased and had success with a bookcase/TV stand combo from New Haven CT when TVs were still the deep kind (didn't have a flat screen back then circa 2006) and had no trouble assembling. They even give you an Allen wrench of the right size for assembly. If you take your time to make sure you have all the pieces--boards, screws, etc. it's not too difficult. And I do have their little orange chargeable drill set that I use all the time, and did with their stuff to help assemble. It does help to have a second person to hold two pieces on a side together and to not fully tighten things until you are sure you have it right.

My recollection is the directions are pictures and not so many, if any words. Hope this helps.

Sounds like y'all were a lot luckier than we were with screw holes being lined up and parts fitting correctly. In the room I'm in right now is a 3 drawer dresser from IKEA. It works well as long as I don't try to move it. If I do the drawers get all discombobulated and I have to take all the stuff out of them, pull them out, get a flashlight & a screwdriver and get down on the floor and....well suffice it to say I do not move it ever anymore. I'm too old to be wrestling with it. As long as it stays in it's spot it's happy and the drawers glide nicely. It's just the right size and the drawers are nice and deep otherwise it would have gotten canned a long time ago.

I have a friend who ordered a sectional online from Ikea. The delivery time took a while, several phone calls back and forth, delivey date came and went, more calls later she finally received the sectional. She didn't have any problems with assembly and all parts arrived. In the long run, she's happy, but delivery was a bit of a pain.

Oh please ladies, regarding assembly, IKEA makes it sooooo easy!! Their instructions are pictures for pete's sake!! They make it so simple a child can do it by following the pretty pictures. We've done a whole lot with IKEA everything. Never had a problem putting them together whatsoever. Our carriage house, in the back, is totally furnished on the second floor by everything IKEA. My kitchenette up there is adorable! Our living are is IKEA, our bedroom is IKEA an our bathroom is IKEA. Everything IKEA! Its a true reflection on how to successfully use IKEA furnishings. We just travelled to my local IKEA which is a 4 hour trip this past weekend. Love that we have their store so close by.
