Closet organizing

There's a new Better Homes & Gardens article on closet organizing. (Well, there are plenty of articles like this all over the place.) What I like the most about this one is the separate hanging space for extra hangers (even though they said this was part of the "before" pics). I had not seen that before. Very clever.

Depressing. That closet is about the same size as my bathroom. No closet in my house has room to hang clothes on two sides. And those spare hangers up there, so nicely stowed: I have not owned that many hangers in my life, total, even with clothes on them, let alone “spare” hangers.

Oh why did I look at those closet pictures?? 😢

I have a rod in my laundry room for hangers. Since I hang dry most of my clothing, I put both the dirty clothes and their hangers in the laundry room.

I had a walk-in closet in my old house which I had done by California closets. It was a good size and always organized - so much so, I had no need for a dresser.

My closet now is a little bigger and love having everything in its own place. Even my husband is thrilled because he has his own now.

We have his & hers walk in closets, though they are small as walk in closets go - at least we each have our own. My DH added extra shelving in them when we first moved here because we have high ceilings and that high space was being wasted.Also one wall in my closet had to have shelves added to serve as our linen closet, because the house did not have a linen closet. All in all the space is adequate for all our clothes plus extra storage on those high shelves.

actually we have a large walk-in closet. It's crowded but organized.

Surprised BH&G pictures a closet with wire clothing rods/racks and wire shelving. My mom had that type in her closet in Skilled Care (last year of her life) and it was horrible. We all agreed wood clothing rods and shelving are superior in strength and cleanliness.

So much dust accumulates on those wire racks and shelves. I was constantly removing mom's things and cleaning those closets. They had daily housekeeping and a weekly thorough cleaning staff for each resident, but no one seemed to notice the dust on closet shelving in her walk-in closets! And little things (belts, scarves, accessories, etc.) would fall through. Not ideal for an elderly patient. We ended up buying colorful open-mesh metal bins for everything so she could see through them and air could circulate well.

I love that closet

I have a dedicated spot in my closet for my empty hangers.

I hang my clothing out to dry so keeping them in the laundry room is not handy.

As I pull out clothing to wear, I move the empty hanger to its spot.

When it's time to take the clean clothes off the line, I carry the extra hangers with me outside and hang as I take down each piece.

When I bought my house brand new in 2001, I called California Closet and they customized my large walk-in closet. It's so functional and attractive. I also have a 5-drawer dresser as part of it.

I hang clothing in my laundry room so I just pick out the spare hangers and bring them to the laundry on a pretty regular basis. I never accumulate too many that way.

My laundry is in the hallway near the door into the garage. Over the washer/dryer DH hung a cabinet that takes about half the space then from the side of the cabinet to the other wall a bar to hang things up as I take them out of the dryer. I never leave hangers there when I'm not doing laundry as it looks too messy.

There are no dresses or purses in the second closet. The person with the first closet needs some shoe polish badly.
