too much decor

As I look at all the posts from decorating books posted here the one thing that stands out to me is all of them have just way too much stuff for me. I seem to like a cleaner , more airy look & feel. Not bare but not cluttered either.

@151949- I agree. Some of them are decor overload and that’s not for me.

I agree. I like decor but just minimal to give a room a finished look.

My friend says some homes are so impersonal they look like they are waiting for House Beautiful to show up.

Personally, i like having a lot of personal photographs of friends & family around to take away that feeling.

A widow lady I know has a curio cabinet and the only thing in there are framed pictures of her family, who live far away. I think it's gorgeous, and as she gets pictures all the time - it is ever evolving.

I have never been one for seasonal decor. I have the things I like out in my house and they pretty much stay that way until I might change them around occasionally and put some away or replace them.

I don't have a lot of things sitting out because I don't like messy tables and surfaces and things seem to attract more things!

Since we moved to a larger house 5 years ago, I like the look of less stuff and more open space. It has been a relief to me, so that's also why I continue to purge things I don't want. Moving really changed our lives in many ways. We moved then retired.

I think there is a fine line between too much and not enough, and you need a good eye to tell the difference.

I do not like family photos as decor. I do not consider them decor.

I went from a 1500 square foot house to a 7500 square foot house. In my 1500 square foot house, I love decorating (especially for holidays). But couldn't do too much because of the small space and very little storage. So, when I moved into a larger house, I would imagine all the decorating I'd do. Turns out I like a bit less "clutter." I do decorate but not nearly as much as I thought I would.

I am not a fan of knick knacks and use family and friends photos to display. I have a few tables in the living room that are left bare. I was big into "stuff" years ago when I was able to take care of it. Now a streamlined home is my goal.

I think for most people who enjoy home decor, (and many don't, so what I have to say may not apply to them), life has stages and cycles in which 'too much', 'not enough' or 'just right' will be different because of different circumstances and times of life.

What was once not enough for me (due to being young, just starting out and having little), became just enough and now has evolved into too much.

Also, whether you are more minimalist or like lots of things, either end of the spectrum can be appreciated and have beauty if done correctly. Displaying a lot isn't always 'cluttered' and having very minimal isn't always cold and uninviting. There are those who can make either extreme quite lovely, warm and welcoming.

But for most of us, our idea of what is 'just right' evolves as our life progresses through various stages and needs.

I have a strong aversion to personal photos in the public areas of a home. I reserve them strickly for the bedroom or photo album. They really add to a cluttered look.

A few photos of loved ones adds to a home's warmth. Clutter is in the eye of the beholder.

I am not a fan of the minimal look. But, I believe we are all different and need to celebrate that in our decorating. What a bore it would be if we were all alike and decorated our homes alike.

I do not care for personal photographs in the main living areas but then again, that is up to the individual.

I'm funny about photos in the home too. I have many, but for me and my decor style, they have to be vintage or newer photos that I do in black and white or sepia to look vintage.

I don't like large photos or in color photos on display and keep mine in groupings of 4x6 sizes, in frames that compliment my decor for the room. Most of mine displayed are old, over 50 years old an back. Again the newer ones are made to look old. And I don't like family photos on the wall for the most part. I've seen really nice arrangements in other people's homes, with some great frames/decor set ups, but I personally don't display family photos on walls, just certain surfaces in clusters like on the piano.

I only keep things in my home that I love so it remains comfortable and cheery without being chaotic. I don’t like to have many things on every surface. I’m in between I guess.

For me, less is best with everything related to decor. I’ve lived in this house for 37 years, and have rooms that have never had the first nail hole in the wall.

I only like framed photos in a few areas. In a downstairs room that is about 18' long, there is a ledge along the entire wall on one side. I have framed photos displayed there, then one small collage of photos, of us, in our bedroom. That's it, the rest are in albums or in storage containers. To each their own.

To each his/her own.....I like looking at others homes and their decor. It may not be exactly the style I would choose but no style or amount of it is correct. It's all personal style.

The world would be extremely boring if we all decorated and looked the same.

I feel the same way. I was looking at all the holiday decor and some of it left me shaking my head. It was too cluttered looking and then I couldn't imagine having to put all of it out and put all of it away. I am so over all that knick-knacky type stuff for the holidays. I like more simple x-mas decor and a few fall things out here and there.

Family is the most important thing to me and with the newer addition of 2 nieces, one of which is my goddaughter, I do have family photos displayed in my family room. The frames fit with my decor and I sprinkle a few other things among the photos so it's not just photo after photo displayed.

I love reading a book and looking up to see my niece's smiling face at me from a photo or glance over and see a photo of our family together on a vacation or a holiday. Sometimes it gives me pause to remember that particular time and be greatful for it.
