Open concept or not

So we have a neighbor whos house has been on the market about 12 weeks. Some of the feedbsck is it isnt open concept. My aunt is renivating and making her house open concept between kitchen and living room.

Do you like open or not?

It’s very popular, but I personally hate it! I would never want my kitchen completely opened up to my family room. It’s a trend that will eventually pass.

We have it and we love it! We do have a formal living room and a dining room, and we do use both of them quite a bit. But the family room, kitchen and another small dining room are without a lot of walls and we love it!

Older houses with small rooms without views to other parts of the house are a hard sell now. People are looking to knock out walls and live with more floor space. And I must say that is very nice to have the "elbow" and walking around room! And higher ceilings go along with that design, and that is nice too.

I don't like full open concept....it makes the house look like a furniture warehouse. I don't mind a kitchen that opens into a family room or hearth room. And, I may be old fashioned, but I like a formal dining room.

I don't like sitting in the living or family room and having to stare into the kitchen. A little open is okay but not completely open.

I don't like a whole house that's open concept... I can see a kitchen-eating-sitting area combination, but I still like walls and specific rooms, too... I am, however, fully tired of hearing the open concept/granite/stainless steel mantra...

I have an older home w/o open concept but we’re not putting out the money to do a remodel. We just do changes for us like painting walls, trim, new doors, and then new counter top and back splash (next year).

I never heard of open concept until I moved to the midwest. At the time, you couldn't buy new construction without it being open concept. My kitchen and eating area are one big room. I have three quarters of a wall separating the living room. The part that was hard to get used to was once someone takes a step in the house, they can see everything in all three rooms. Ah and the open staircase to the cellar. I'm used to it now and would do it again.

I cannot imagine living in a home with a kitchen that is not part of a larger living space. We married in the 70s, and even our first home had a large, wide-open kitchen/dining/living area. I suppose there are still some homes, vintage or new, with cut-up, dark, set-apart rooms? Depressing to me. To each her own, but it does seem that most people seek airy, open spaces which allow shared light, views, and breezes.

A true open concept home does not appeal to me in the least.

I don't mind some homes that have a large kitchen area, with a family room open with it, but I want a separate formal living room and formal dining room in my home, and the bedrooms on a second floor, or separate from the main living area, where you don't see them or their doors from the 'public' spaces.

I like it.

Good way to get a lot of floor space in a smaller home but in a larger home it can feel cavernous. Especially when you ad vaulted ceilings.

Like walking in and yelling Hellooooooo!

The open concept is great for parties or family gatherings so no one is isolated in the kitchen but I still like that my kitchen even has a door I can close so if SO is watching tv in the living room, I don't have to hear what he is watching and can have music or watch a movie while cooking or baking without either one of us being disturbed. I could have either though.

I don't care for it, especially the ones where you walk in the front door and the entire first floor is open.

You have to keep that entire floor neat and clean and once you start to dust, wash floors you have to keep on going until you are finished.

I need walls and rooms, sometimes you just need to get away from all the noise in the living room.

My kitchen, living room and TV room are all open. I really like it. the only thing I dont care for is the cooking smells in the open rooms. But with Lysol spray that is taken care of.

I think there's the factors of what's out the windows if there are windows. There's a few other factors that I'd have to see first.

Oh, honestly (said in exasperation, not anything personal!). That's what "they" said about my house and boy did lots of people miss out on the opportunity to live in a unique neighborhood with beautiful scenery, in a hand-built (not production!) home, in a popular area with lots of amenities. No HOA. Nice sized lot with beautiful trees and established gardens - that, to me, was a deal maker. Not the fact of how the kitchen was laid out!

I do love my "outdated" kitchen, and the floor plan which allows me privacy. I love having a foyer big enough to greet people in without them having access to views of the inside unless I choose to invite them there. And a nice front porch to which I can keep them, if I don't want them in the house at all!

I guess it's all what you make it. To me, it's the total package - open concept or not. Do you love living there?

You dislikers would hate my home then. I have a total open concept. My "rooms" are defined by how I place my furniture. It works for me. Everyone seems to love my home so ....
