I buy new towels every few years. Other uses for old towels are the garage, keep one in the car, give them to friends with small children to use for messy clean ups or scout troops. Sometimes with children and play, or crafts, it is nice to have a real towel but then to be able to throw it away without guilt. Same with my husband. Sometimes he is repairing something and is filthy and greasy. He can wash up and I don't care how dirty the towel gets, just throw it away. They are good to keep with first aid supplies to wrap around ice packs. You can sew them into a drawstring bag and put your shoes in them when packing in a suitcase.

How often do you refresh your bath & kitchen towels? What do you do with the old ones? I have a closet full of old towels, and I really do not know to what good use I can put them. Terrible dust clothes, I know that! DH uses disposable towels in the garage.

At our house towels are used until they are still usable but looking old, then to the camper and when they are no longer even good enough for the camper DH takes them to the garage for work rags and washing the car. After that they go to the trash.

Like others have suggested, most animal shelters need them, as do most vet's offices, and that is where I take mine. I save out enough to use for rags for washing the car and other dirty clean up jobs, and the rest go to our vet's office, along with blankets and throws I don't want anymore.

We have dog pounds in Ohio, some are kill and some are non kill. One year at Christmas I wanted to donate blankets and towels, and maybe dog food and they were so ridiculous at our county's pound. Nothing could have a hole in it, they were under contract to buy food from a particular dog food company and didn't want food, and the list of 'no' and 'we can'ts' went on and on. IT was like she was doing her best to talk me out of bringing anything.

All this from a very poor county dog shelter that flooded every other year or so, and sometimes dogs died in the floods. It was quite disappointing listening to her drone on and on about what they wouldn't take and the great condition it all needed to be in, I gave up and moved on.

That is when I learned the vet needed stuff, so I began to take it there. The workers at our vet's office commented the things were nicer than what they had to use for people at their homes. The pound missed out and I refuse to try and help that particular location again.

I tend to clean out the blankets, throws and towels while they are still good enough to donate to Goodwill, and if yours are still nice enough, just you are tired of them, consider a charity of your choice like that or a shelter for the homeless.

I have many bath towels --- which are approx. 15 to 20 yrs old - from Costco. They're still in good shape, but a couple of weeks ago, I went to Costco and they displayed those "larger" bath towels for $6.00/ea. I treated myself to 3 new towels.

I also had 2 towels that were really "old" - and I gave it to my little dog - I always keep a towel in her bed.
