I sometimes wonder about coastal decor. How many people in America actually live on the coast? I realize you don't have to live on the coast to enjoy coastal decor, but I'd think most would. Doesn't appear to have mass appeal.

I personally like the home decor to somewhat match or compliment the surroundings.

I do live on the coast/ocean and it appeals to me but if I was in the Mountains I would never even think about it.

It is personal and thats what makes homes interesting....I have a friend who has her family room decorated very nautical because they love boating. They live in the Mountains of PA.

@Peaches McPhee Most of us who do live at the shore don't do coastal either. At least not to the extent it's done in these pics.With everything white or blue and no decor except shells etc. This spring I decided to change things up a bit and put out SOME coastal things shells , a pretty lantern , statue of a mermaid. That is more than enough coastal for me. First of all I wouldn't want to have to keep all that white clean. Second - when you get tired of it - what do you do? All the big expense items are blue or white. Most people do what I did - some coastal decor but not everything coastal.

I live in Michigan. I was born in San Diego. My master bath is coastal. I love it, but as a child I was less than 2 miles from the ocean. My shower curtain is shear with thin strips of blues and greens. My rugs are plain blue. I have a wicker basket and wicker shelf unit. On the walls I have a map of San Diego , a picture of Marilyn Monroe on the beach , a tapestry of ocean blue swirls. On the shelves I have a sand castle and a unicorn whose horn is made out of a shell. So, eclectic and not too matching. However, my kitchen and yard are country and my bedroom is trendy blue and gold with bird and feather decor.

The rooms are beautiful, but very fancy.

Funny, no one seems to like the chandler. I think it is stunning and would look good as a statement piece and the focal point of a more toned down room.

I love everything - except the color of the inside of the built-ins.

I love the ocean as much as anybody but am not a fan of 'coastal', 'beachy' or 'nautical' decor. No matter how not cookie-cutter the attempt, it almost always reads as somewhat trite to me... And while not at all unique to a beach themed setting, I'm way over the multi-strand chandeliers featured in the first picture. I didn't really care for the first one I saw and now, hundreds later, I still don't really care for them...
