Please be careful to purchase a bunk bed system where the mattress on the top bunk fits very tight against both side rails. My son who was about 5-6 at the time, was almost was killed in his sleep because he fell out of the top bunk and his head became stuck between the mattress and the side safety rail. The safety rail was about 6 inches above the mattress, and would have been okay if the mattress would not have moved and left a gap big enough for him to fall through.

By the grace of God, I woke up to check on him. He was already blue when I found him hanging there. We fixed the problem by wedging a soft brick of foam beside the mattress to keep it tight between the rails so it wouldn't move.

There would be no danger for an adult in this situation.

Can anyone recommend sturdy bunk beds? We're switching out one of the bedrooms at the cottage to a grand kids room and bunk beds would be the most practical. I'm not finding any that I really feel are safe and reliable. TIA. chum

I don't have any experience with bunk beds, but my husband and I have done a bit of shopping for our daughter's room in recent months. We've been at tons of furniture stores, so we've seen it all.

By far, the most well-made and attractive bunk beds came from Pottery Barn Kids. They are very expensive, but the quality is certainly there.

Other than that, we have seen plenty of bunk beds at some outlet furniture stores in our area, as well as IKEA. IKEA's furniture seems to be very popular, but I'm not really sure of the quality there.

I don't trust IKEA's quality for something this important. have a great day, chum

You are very welcome!

FYI -- Pottery Barns Kids has a MUCH larger selection of furniture online. I only know this because I saw a few things that I really liked on their site, only to find that there was barely anything in the store. The store we have at the mall near me is brand new, but very small. I'm not sure if all PB Kids are like that though.

Even if you only see a set or two in person, it should give you a good idea about the quality of the pieces. That way it won't be such a gamble to order a set online if you choose to.

Good Luck!

I had put bunkbeds in the Grandkid's room a few years ago. I hated them from the first week I put them in. It about killed two of us to make the top bunk since you have to actually stick your hands between the rails and lift the mattress in order to get the sheets/blankets tucked in so it looks nice. The top bunk was not used very often, thank goodness! I finally split them apart two weeks ago and am soooooooooooo relieved!! It got so I hated even LOOKING at that thing
