Speaking of HOA ....

We were notified today that the week from May 21 thru May 26 they are having our street resurfaced. This needs done - I'm not complaining but they tell us we can't drive on the street for 5 days - and yet only give us 10 days notice. DH has a doctor's appt, and a vestry mtg that week and I have a luncheon I have already paid for. We will not get mail or the newspaper delivery either.No arrangements have been made for an alternate place nearby where we could park our car and walk or bike to, or to perhaps to do only one lane of the street at a time, so the other side could be used.(this is what they did in the past - when the developer was still in charge)But they are sorry for the inconvenience.

I would tell them they better figure out a way to do it as they have in the past. They need to do it so people can still get out of the neighborhood. I woul tell them I will be driving on it because you have things to do & it's not your problem it's theirs.

That's what they did when they replaced our street with concrete instead of asphalt. They were doing different sections at a time. DH had to park on the other side of the road & down the road as they were doing it since he could not get in the driveway at times.

We only had to wait 24 hrs to drive on it.

The pizza delivery guy went around the blockade right in to the wet concrete.

Bet he got fired as I'm sure the Pizza joint & or driver both had to pay for the damages.

They were out the next day redoing the street. LOL!!!

We use to give our residents all the instructions on where to park and they still got mail and the paper. You need to speak with your office and who is in charge of all this. They should want happy residents.

You can park at the end of the street, on another street, walk or bike to your house, it happens all the time.

Surely they realize that people can't be held hostage for 5 continuous days. What if there is a medical emergency or a 911 call?

This was recently done at my DD apt complex. They resurfaced the back half of the road and people had to find parking spaces at the front of the complex, then vice versa. But they could drive on the new asphalt after 24 hrs.

I just wrote to the manager and said he needs to clarify this e mail because I'm sure they don't think we can just stay home for a week. My neighbor across the street goes to work every day for heaven's sake! Waiting to hear a response.

I'm sure they do not expect you to be a prisoner in your home for five days. You must simply call them and ask where to park. People will be going to and from work and they know that. There must be a street nearby where you can park and to which you can watch. Rather than complaining on the WBC boards, you should be calling your homeowners association to find the answers.

I live in a small townhouse community, so it's probably not a fair comparison. They are resurfacing the street and striping the parking space on half of the community today. The other half will be done on Monday. I had time yesterday morning to get a decent parking space just outside of our street. We will be allowed back on out street tomorrow morning, but I'm sure many will start moving back later this evening.

Not sure if we'll be able to get mail or UPS today, but I have to admire Amazon. Their local delivery guy came around with a handtruck, walking the sidewalks to make his deliveries. (I'm sure UPS and USPS are not allowed to be so accommodating.)

As a seen on a highway some time ago: "temporary inconvenience, permanent improvement". However, I'd not be feeling as calm about things were the situation described by the OP what we had to contend with. FIVE DAYS?????? They're already walking on our street to mark off the striping. That stuff dries so fast these days. Even when they did more extensive road work here some years ago, we still only had to stay off for one day.

When they totally dug up and redid my street many years ago, I had to park in the visitor parking for at least a week, and walk up the front sidewalk, entering through my front door. My garage is in the back and literally opens into the street (which was just a big hole at the time), so I couldn't even go into my garage. It was a pain going to and from work, and getting groceries, but I got through it OK.

So a fire truck or ambulance or police car couldn't respond to a call?

Never heard of not being able to drive on a newly paved road for 5 days.

What are they using that takes that long to cure?

Our streets were resurfaced 2 years ago. They did it where you could park on a alternate street day hours & overnite at our clubhouse parking lots. Plus our security provided transportation by golf carts (from 6am-10pm no one used it after 8 I'm sure they were in bed😉) anyway it worked fine.

If you needed a ride to your vehicle all you had to do was ask. We could drive on the street after 2 days. It was a little inconvenient but it worked out fine...

What really annoys the h#### our of me is when the close our pool facilities for 3 weeks with no notice when the "snowbirds" leave for updates/repairs. It's usually in the month of June or July when company is visiting! ugh....

Does the board not have to have a vote on the paving with the owners prior to scheduling the work? When i lived in a condo, they took a vote and it was put in the minutes from the meeting.

The street I live on was re-paved last year and we had to stay off it for 2 whole days only. That was easy for me because I am retired and only go to the grocery store one time a week, so it was OK. They did provide us a place to park our car about 4 houses down from me that we could park and walk to our car. Would have been a really short walk for me, but like I mentioned, I didn't need to go anywhere those 2 days. It was one day for paving, and one day for it drying (I guess??)!! LOL

That is really unacceptable and I would make sure to get with the neighbors and file a complaint so the HOA knows this is not going to work. There is no way you can not leave your home for five days or that you can't get mail either for that matter. The contractor who is doing the work needs to accomdate the home owners and do something that will work for all of you.

@151949 It's good you asked for clarification because they should not be able to stop the mail, and as you said, people have to get to work.

I don't always pay attention to poster's names, but @GenXmuse, you don't seem to like the OP which I don't understand, nor do I need to. I guess sometimes people rub each other the wrong way.

Exactly, I think OP needs to get over it and move on. If this is the biggest challenge she is facing in her life, she is darn lucky.

Further to my earlier post on this thread, I have now had two deliveries today, despite our road being closed. Amazon came around the sidewalk with a hand-truck, delivering packages. And just now, my doorbell rang and there was a UPS delivery. Didn't see the driver anywhere, but his truck was parked outside the barricade. I'm assuming he walked in the packages also. Not sure what USPS will do.
