Putting My House Back Together

I had the entire interior of my house painted this week. The painters were here almost four full days. There were three of them most days. Four were here one day.

It's hard putting everything back! My house is small. I finished hanging the pictures today. There are a lot that aren't going back up. I just kept adding things over the years without taking something down to make room. I've put decorative items back on shelves. Now I'm working on the bookshelves in my office. There are many books I no longer want. My garage is full of things to donate. I've got quite a lot left to do.

I had cookie jars on top of my kitchen cabinets. I could no longer get up there to dust, and my housekeepers couldn't either. When the painters took them down for me there was layers of dust on them. They won't go back up. The painters used the shop vac to get the dust off the tops of the cabinets before they painted. I had actually planned to get up there and do it before they came, but I couldn't get up on the counter. They told me before they came that they would take things down for me and move furniture.

They were great painters. They covered all my furniture and put drop cloths everywhere. They loved my dog Frankie, and she really loved them. I'm very happy with the result but was glad they weren't going to be here today!

It is always so nice when you get a huge project done and you are really happy with the results. It is just uplifting and perfect time of year to do it.

I'm sure it's beautiful. I know it's a lot of work. You will be so happy when it's all done.

I'm sittlng here waiting for the carpet installers to come to do the master bedroom and family room.

All of the masterbed room furniture is in the front room, office and spare bedroom. I'm getting rid of a huge antique armoire. I want less furniture.

The family has the sofa and 2 recliners still in the room....no place to put them.

The painter comes tomorrow to paint the master bedroom & master bath.

I can't wait for everything to be put back together.

I was wondering how you were doing with this project!

So glad to hear the worst of the work is done, and it all went so well. Having contractors in the house can go well, and sometimes it doesn't.

I think you will be happy with your new 'cleaner' look. We completely cleaned out my son's room several years back. New window, new carpet, painted.

When it was time to put the room back together, I loved his furniture, so it all went back, but nothing went back on the walls except an antique clock that goes back in our family and matches the furniture very well, and two battery operated sconces on either side of the closet, for mood lighting.

Most of the decor on the dresser, desk, book case and night stand was removed and packed up for him when he gets a home and children (much of it was child themed, expensive and gifts from his grandmother, like handmade Amish wooden train and other similar toys and art).

I still after about six years, love the look of that room. It is so uncomplicated and still looks fresh and clean!

Enjoy the process of choosing what to keep, how to arrange it, and living in your refreshed spaces!

@Mary Bailey It sounds like you've already worked really hard preparing for the painters and carpet installers. I'm sure you'll love everything when it's finished!

@Love my grandkids Henry is completely back to normal. Yesterday was a good day for him. He came out and explored when they went to lunch. He even peeked out at them once. I'm very glad I didn't board him because he came out immediately when they left every day. He's lying beside me right now. Thanks for asking about him.

I can empathize with you since we just had our entire interior painted last month - took 4 days and while it wasn't horrible, I was so glad when they were finished and gone! Two of my furry felines hid under the bed during the days when the painters were here - poor things. What I learned: if I have things in places that I can't dust or clean, then I need to either store them or get rid of them; all of my Lladros and Royal Daulton - time to get of most of them - they collect dust and my collection days are over with; hire a cleaning lady (which I've done) to do the things I tend to put off! DH has health issues and can no longer help me out, so now I've found someone who can! It's well worth it and the entire house painting project made me reevaluate a lot of things. Now that it's done, I won't wait so long next time!

I would really love to paint the interior of my home. It needs it desparately! We moved in 2 years ago. The previous owners left marks, scratches, etc from moving all their furniture. You can tell where they hung pictures. We remodeled 3 bathrooms upstairs and each bathroom has its own bedroom so when we redid the the bathrooms, we also repainted the adjoining bedroom and closet. So, the entire upstair has been repainted except the hallway. But that leaves the entire second floor. Every room in this house is a different color, so are the ceilings. They old owners loved their color. I just cringe as to what this will cost. Before we moved in, we had gotten quotes from painters for just 4 rooms and it was $5000. I just can't imagine what this will cost.

My DH paints every year. One year is the first floor and the next year is the second floor, so my walls and ceilings get painted every other year.

This year is the whole first floors turn and hopefully, the master bedroom. I asked him not to paint the master last year, so he only painted the master bath.

I am going to paint some exterior trim and doors as soon as it gets warmer. My front door could use a fresh coat. I always remove the doors and paint them flat propped up on wooden horses or I’ll get drip marks.

I am not as neat a painter as my DH, but I do chip in. I also paint the fire hydrant in front of our house. The township installed a rusty, ugly hydrant 30 years ago and they have never done any painting or maintenance.

@NickNack I'm sure you are happy to get back to normal. Our interior painting begins next Monday. Luckily, no pets are involved and my DH will be at work so I'll just stay out of the painter's way. We will start with Sherwin-Williams beige colored paint in the den. If we like it, the painter will carry the color throughout the house.

Isn't the hard work worth it in the end ... I'm so enjoying the "fruits of my labor" -- decluttering, purging and selecting what goes back into my decor.

Its a great feeling to walk into the house and see it bright, fresh and inviting!!!

(as my spouse said the next owner can do it ... we're done!!! well, not really in my mind but in his == lol)

I think you have mentioned your DH and his painting in the past. You have to know it is making me (and probably more) jealous! LOL

I think at this point I just might sell my soul for a man that liked to paint, did it well and did it often!

Is your's for rent? LOL

@Mominohio He works rent free. He has painted for friends and family and doesn’t charge them.

i am blessed, but I had no idea how much. $5000 is mind blowing.

I know we have posters here from a very wide range of economic means, but having work done, whether it be remodeling, painting, landscaping, having the car repaired etc. is so expensive.

We tend to do as much as we can, not always because we want to, but when you take quotes to get a job done, and you look at what you have to sacrifice to pay for it, or how long you have to save to achieve it, you just moan and groan and do as much of it as you can for yourself!

Hang on to that good guy, he's a keeper!

well, ladies you are "lucky" to have spouses who can tackle the jobs...mine, not so -- one time I asked him to hang a portrait frame pic of the kids...I heard what seemed like he was hammering through concrete ... omg, he put a whole in the wall with the hammer! My dad came over fixed it and hung the pic correctly

I think he really isn't (nor was taught by his father) into doing any kind of stuff like home improvements, plus he doesn't like it. I on the other hand, had a dad who could do everything from electrical, plumbing to installing siding. (He was a contractor). My brother is handy too.

I enjoy the challenge but not when he's around!!! He doesn't enjoy it and frankly, I'd rather pay a professional to have it done RIGHT! (The costs outweigh the stress of him tackling it!)

@jannabelle1, can I ask what you will do with them? I am in the same boat. Mine are mostly stored but think I want the space instead.

@NickNack Wow, I am sure you are happy to have this job completed. I'll bet it looks so wonderful and fresh.

We painted our field rock fireplace last summer (floor to 16 ft. ceiling) and what a job! Took four days and a ton of work. The estimate was $1000. No way.
