When we built our home I wanted a Garden window in my kitchen, but it would of been on the east side of our house and any plants in it would of fried.

If what I do or create inspires someone else that is great, but I don't set out to do things for that purpose. I'm not into creating what others will love, but what I and my family will love, or find comforting, beautiful, or homey.

I enjoy the creative process of putting together decor, but don't have a lot of money at this time, to spend doing it, so I'm in a phase of using what I have to create new and fresh things. I'm enjoying revisiting things I already have, and combining them in new ways.

Being an inspiration is just not on my radar, I would feel it a bit pretentious to strive for that in my simple homemaking process. I do love to share tips and results with others and see theirs though. Sharing the experiences is enjoyable.

Yes ...I just read a Coastal Living Issue and the new issue of HGTV Mag. for inspiration. I love to be inspired and feel great when I give a friend an idea for their home.

Regal Bee..you and many others have inspired me numerous times with your ideas and lovely photos...I am thankful

@Mominohio I can't help but think you may have possibly misunderstood me. Do you consider me pretentious? Money has nothing to do with inspiring others. You inspired me with your 'Lunch, Anyone' post last week.

Forgive me.....but I am a bit confused.............

I just don't use the word 'inspire' lightly. I will say that I share ideas, processes, results, and joy in the homemaking arena, but my intent isn't to inspire anyone, or really be inspired (although I guess it could happen). I prefer to think of it as sharing. The term 'inspire' to me, should be on a higher plain or something.

My comments about money and reworking decor is just a statement about where I'm at in decorating/ renovating at this particular point in life. Not sure there is much that is truly inspiring about that! LOL

I think I consider it pretentious for myself, to set out to inspire anyone. If others strive to be an inspiration, that is not for me to judge.

Yes, @Regal Bee, the Slatkin house definitely offered some ideas I'd love to adopt! I liked their use of plants and especially topiary-- the way they freely mix greenery and antiques and modern art-- very appealing. I also like their casual use of big three wick chunky candles, in clear glass, strewn on the floor and steps. It's a kind of "throwaway chic" that seems to suit them.

I get ideas too from my small library of design books, from magazines like "House Beautiful" and "Elle Decor", and of course from nature and the turn of the seasons.

Here's a minor little inspiration I got. Wanting warm weather to come, I came across some bags of sea glass in lovely colors of cobalt, aqua and clear, in the craft section of Walmart! The glass has been tumbled, I guess, in flat, irregular shards, and is beautifully "frosted" and translucent.

Then they also had some bone white pebbles-- snagged those as well.

At home, i dug up a triangular bowl i have, in a dreamy shade of blue-turquoise. It looks 'midcentury modern', but it isn't. Mixed the sea glass and the white pebbles, put in the blue bowl, set on coffee table. Those cool colors and glass translucency in the modern bowl just instantly make me think of Greece, maybe a beach on the isle of Crete....

@Mominohio@I don’t understand the difference between what op said and you stated.I think you both decorate for yourselves and families...maybe friends.I like to see what anyone who is willing to share is doing.It isn’t about how much money but creativity and thought and a dash of love.I had a friend whose h9me was decorated with repurposed items from friends,family,garage sales etc and I loved her home above all others that spent more.

That is an interesting question. I love to create a beautiful environment and love to see beauty. My inspiration usually comes from an object, so I am inspired to design around or work that object into my design. When I see decor trends and ideas that I like it becomes an influence but not an inspiration. I am flattered and enjoy it when others appreciate what I have created but don't want to be their inspiration and it even makes me feel uncomfortable.

I'm inspired by what others share here & a few things in magazines.

I never want my home to be like something out of a magazine I want it to be homey & welcoming. As a matter of fact, when someone compliments my home I take great joy in knowing I must be doing something right.

I have a good friend who enjoys her home like I do. She has recently moved into my neighborhood we are both enjoying shopping for her home & getting ideas / inspiration from each other.

I'm enjoying spending her $$$ vs mine!!! lol

I actually think that oftentimes decorating can be more fun or even inspirational by spending less money. While I can appreciate a beautiful expensively decorated home, I personally am more "wowed" when someone takes an inexpensive item and uses it in a unique way. For me, it is more satisfying when I force myself to rethink what I aleady have and make it work, whether by adding a fresh coat of paint or rearranging a grouping of furniture. My husband and I have been doing a lot of remodeling over the last several months, and, while we have done many of the smaller projects ourselves, we have also hired out some jobs. It has been shocking get some of these quotes. We built our home 23 years ago, and it was a real stunner to get a quote to redo a small bathroom that was more than we spent for our entire kitchen back then. So, I've tried to resist the urge to spend even more money on all new furniture, accessories, etc. I've been repainting several pieces (a bookcase, a cabinet, a bathroom vanity, plant stands, you name it). I'm really loving the results. I get a "new" piece of furniture and I have the satisfaction of doing it myself.

I can, and often do, spend hours perusing decorating websites and magazines (Coastal Living is a current favorite), but I feel like, after a while, they all look the same. I like many elements of the current crop of popular HGTV shows (Fixer Upper, Property Brothers, etc.) but I can't really remember any particular episode because they are all so similar. Three friends of mine recently either bought or remodeled their homes, and all feature gray walls, muted upholstery on the furniture and absolutely no window treatments. I like them all. They are truly lovely homes, but they are all the same. I love to see unique items, something to set a place apart. Above all, I love it when a home reflects the people who live there. I think that is truly inspiring.

I don't particularly like seeing my neighbors copy my ideas. When we lived in Pittsburgh, my DH built me window boxes for all around the railings on our deck.We planted all but one with pretty flowers and that last one with herbs. The next summer everyone had window boxes of flowers around their deck. DH & I just shrugged.So much for our unique idea.

Here in Florida - I decided that instead of planting one large planter with my herbs I would buy pretty pots and put each herb in it's own pot out on the lanai. I used smalllish pots because I use my herbs so they stay trimmed. I loved the results - it looks like I have 7 houseplants out there in pretty pots.Now I am seeing around my neighborhood others doing the same thing.Pretty, bright color pots with herbs around their lanais. We had put out a large pot in the driveway between our house and the other half's garage door. Filled it with about 8 geranium plants, and some white petunias. Next thing we know, there are pots just like ours all up and down the street.Exactly the same.

I wish people would come up with their own ideas .

Of course, not in all aspects of life but I do think it's great the sharing on this home forum is full of creative & inspiring ideas. And honestly, I've "stolen" some to use in my home! 😉😊💐

I was upset, for a few minutes, but I am okay. I'm sensitive but also know TOTALLY who I am.

I love to be inspired and think of the word in a positive manner 100% of the time. I hope everyone continues to inspire me and I don't care if they copy me or not...it's all complimentary to me.

My neighbor recently asked me if I would be upset if she ordered the same outdoor rug that we have on our deck because they love it and it goes with everything...I said of course not. Her deck looks totally different than mine and they both look nice.

@DREAMON I suppose I was thinking of inspired/inspiring/inspiration in design terms which was always so positive. So many magazines refer to the 'inspiration' inside in the contents. I was a designer for years and also had a consulting business and I always thought it was positive.

When I thought I was 'off-base' it really threw me. I am so sensitive and this has always been a blessing and a curse with me.

I love to inspire others and make them think of the beauty of their homes. Guess I get myself into trouble......sometimes. Don't we all?

I agree 100% with homedecor1. Please don't stop posting pictures of your beautiful home and great ideas. You are a great inspiration to me and not at all pretentious. I have picked up so many ideas from you generously sharing your photos and talents. In answer to your original question I also go to Pinterest for inspiration but your designs are my favorites. Count me in as one who has 'borrowed' a few of them and I always look forward to you posting new pictures. Please keep them coming!

@Regal Bee I inspire myself. For instance, I had never thought of creating fairy garden(s), until I saw items on zulily a few years ago. I couldn't stop from acquiring so many, and finally created a Summer Fairy garden, a Holloween Fairy garden, a Fall Fairy garden, and a Christmas Fairy garden. As with all of my designs, I just start placing things, then I am out of control as my creative juices begin to flow, and pieces seem to place themselves.

As for home furnishings, I know what I want, and keep looking until I find what I am looking for, don't use ideas from anywhere, just look at the room and decide what it needs to suit my lifestyle.

I am also repurposing items I have had for decades and havn't used since I bought them, and was excited this Spring to see that they would fit in beautifully.

@mousiegirl What you are referring to is what I call 'evolving design' and I practice this all the time. I start with one object and just keeping working it until a design fits/works. I really believe that all good design evolves. That keeps me from getting frustrated if I can't work out a design or plan right away. Sometimes, just backing away for a couple of hours gives a whole new lookout.

I also love to repurpose items and furniture and try to think outside the box. It is amazing what one can come up with when you allow your thinking processes to flow.
