Need kitchen backsplash opinion

I currently don't have any type of backsplash behind my stove and under my cabinets. I'm wondering what anyone has used besides using ceramic tile. I need something and since it will be a project that I need to handle myself, I'm thinking of looking at the textured adhesive "tiles". Has anyone installed something like this, and how did it work out? I've got a small kitchen and don't think I can get someone to come in for such a small project. Thanks in advance for any opinions or recommendations.

It's not for everyone, but I want, when I re do my kitchen, to use that old tin ceiling looking type stuff.

At least that is what I have coveted for years. When the time comes....who knows?

My sister put sheets of adhesive tiles that look like glass in my mother's kitchen. Took a couple hours. You couldn't tell they weren't the real thing. They've been up about two years. No issues at all. She got them at Lowe's.

@Mominohio that was my sister's first choice. She bought a big panel and it sat there for years. It was then voted out. LOL

Please keep in mind, when you decide on a backsplash, that it has to be cleaned. The backsplash behind my stove gets splattered with who know what all the time. Sometimes a textured surface is tough to clean. I have a textured floor in the kitchen and even sitting on the floor and scrubbing - I don't always get it completely clean.

Not sure what would be the best. But please think of what would be easy to clean.

Do you "have" to get a backsplash? I actually prefer having none. My countertop has an edge that goes up the wall about 4 inches all the way around (old fashioned, I know). Above that is painted. Previous house was wall papered in that space. I like simple and easy to keep up. :-)

I saw some very nice looking adhesive tiles at Menards when we were doing our kitchen. My dh and I are not do it your selfers on things like that so we hired ours done....but we were very tempeted, the price is pretty good.

I have the tin backsplash in a silverish pewter color. It is easy to keep clean. We have had it since 2011.

My backsplash is mirrored with beveled slats. It looks great.I get compliments all the time!!

We did a dark Smokey gray glass subway tile in a herringbone pattern.

@ceekay, I probably don't "need" a backsplash, but I thought it might be easier to wipe down than the painted wall in that area. We just had our town home painted and I was stunned how faded the paint was from trying to wipe off splatters.

I've seen wallpaper that looks exactly like small 1" variegated tiles. You can also buy by the yard, clear heavyweight vinyl that you can just put up with thumb tacks. The faux tin ceiling tiles are a plastic material that you finish any way you like. I saw them at Lowe's.

@jannabelle1 - I understand your issue! Two walls of our kitchen in this house are wallpapered. It is teflon coated (it's been up for years) and is easy to wipe off. The walls where the countertop is are painted below, around, and above the cabinets. I wonder if you could find a wallpaper (@Kachina624 mentions several variations) that is easy to keep clean but perhaps looks like tiles or whatever pattern you like? No special skills needed to put up wallpaper and you can replace easily if you get tired of it. I am a do it yourselfer but like the less labor intensive options, if possible. Our previous house came with a piece of plexiglass attached to the wall over the sink to protect the wallpaper. Seemed to do the job so we left it up. Good luck!

@ceekay, I've sure put up a ton of wallpaper over past years, so I'm familiar with the cutting and pasting and hanging! Even though it's just DH and me, and we don't fry a lot of food, there sure seems to be a lot of splatters that require a good wiping down. I'm going to Lowe's this week and check out the self-adhesive tiles since there were quite a few positive comments about their durability. Surely they have to be easier than hanging wallpaper in an entire room like I did 20 and 30 years ago!

I've had it all. Wallpaper backsplash in my apartment. Fake brick in my first home. Durable paint in my current home. Last year, we went with mosaic tiles from a home improvement store. The tiles look very nice.
