Do You Follow Home Trends?

Home trends and styles come and go with the wind. I never have been one to follow them and I decorate with what I love.....whether it is in style or not.

Do you follow home trends?

I decorated my apartment when I moved in here in 1993. Other than changing the curtains once and rearranging some bookcases (going to do it again tomorrow) .... everything looks the same.

So ... I guess the answer is NO, I don't follow trends.

Giggles-I DO follow “trends” as long as they date back to 1955! You can expect Lucy and Ethel to come strolling around the corner any minute, and that’s EXACTLY the way DH and I like it.

Even if I wanted to “follow” I’d NEVER be able to keep up. Glad some of you who choose being trendy are enjoying decorating the way YOU do it. It takes ALL KINDS.......

I like to "follow" them but I don't follow them, if you know what I mean.

I like to look at magazines, blogs, online retail sites etc. But mostly I shake my head at things in the last 10 years or more.

I tend to decorate well behind the curve of what is current, trending, or popular. And that is ok with me.

I've used the same paint color in all of the 3 houses I've owned since 1980, and the wood furniture stays the same. I've replaced some upholstered pieces and changed the artwork.

The media and the construction business would love for everyone to follow the home trends. But in real life very few can afford to do that.How many times can you afford to redo a kitchen in one lifetime?

My house was built 8 years ago - yet people who toured it during the time we were trying to sell commented it was out of date because we have carpet and formica countertops. Both still in excellant condition. Also that the walls are beige , not grey, and they would never consider white appliances.

Someone actually wrote that we would have to completely gut the 1960's kitchen.

I do know people who have followed every new trend - and now they are in their 70's and can't retire because they have too much debt. So given the choice between the fancy house , heavily mortgaged vs. my little house with it's 2010 decor that's all paid for - I'll stick with the paid for version.

I’m not a follower of trends. When I need to buy something, I buy what I like.

Our couch is 11 years old. Still looks in style to me.

I agree. I have almost all Oak furniture, and it would look awful with grey walls & floors.

No, never. I like what I like, which is extremely simplistic, and it’s not trendy.

A decorator would want to add rugs, pillows, artwork, and other touches to my rooms, which is exactly what I don’t like.

@RedTop a really good decorator will help you pull YOUR ideas together. Never hire someone who wants to decorate your home the way you would not be happy with it.

Trust me it does look awful. Our new house is so different our old oak stuff looks terrible. We have to get a new table, tv stand, and a couple end tables. But we are living with it. They won’t buy anything until they find what they love.

my sisters refuses to spend a ton on things. Because she knows she will get tired of it in a few years and want something different.

When I replace something, which is very rare, I replace it with something current. I bought a new sofa a couple of years ago that has English Roll Top arms. I have seen that a lot in magazines, and I love it. It should last me at least 20 years.

My furniture is mostly mahogany. Some pieces were antiques that I inherited from my mother, such as a beautiful chest in my living room. I try to buy timeless pieces that don't need to be replaced and/or updated. I do add and change out artwork sometimes, although I don't get rid of what I take down. I bought new bedroom and living room rugs a couple of years ago. I'm getting ready to paint my house beige. I can't wait. Beige is a current color but not one I think I'll get tired of.

I'm more at the opposite side of following trends. Perhaps a trend setter??

Years ago, I wanted to use gray as a backdrop for my LR/DR. Hunting for anything gray was a nightmare, whether it was carpeting, furnishings, etc. Sales people looked at me like I had lost my mind.

I do not follow home trends for major things like furniture, lamps, etc. but I do like change.

I do change small decor pieces and try and keep them current. I have added and taken away art, mirrors, pillows, replaced picture frames, storage benches and ottomans..things like that.

I change my bathroom and bedroom colors when the spirit moves me.

Curtains are another thing I change about every 2 years.

I use to keep everything incase I wanted to change back but now donate it.

We did make sure we put tile, hardwood, Trex decking, and good quality windows in our home when it was built so we have a good base.

I don't follow trends. I buy what I like and many times I am frustrated that I can't find a color or style I like because it isn't "on trend" at the time.

I am not a gray person. I simply dont find it pretty and it leaves me cold and it's in every new home around here. Gray washed wood cabinets, gray washed wood floors.... gray and white titles and backsplashes. One house we favor has a garish light and dark gray, white with a little tan backsplash in the kitchen in a not subtle pattern (I call it a cartoon splash ).... but if we end up getting it, I'll get used to it. At least the carpet and walls are a soft taupe.... and I can end up putting our stuff in there and have it look good.....

But no... I sure don't follow trends at all any more. My decor are antique pieces that I just love, furniture and smalls as well as contemporary items that blend. I remember getting caught up in the kitchen Blue Goose craze in the 80's and went way overboard and then realized I got incredibly bored with it a few years into it. I donated it all realizing that whatever I trended with in the future better be stuff I know will stand up to my liking it for a long time and what I have now does just that.

I noticed that it all went to blue goose heaven at the same time, LOL.... and I keep running into pieces at thrift stores.... saw the cookie jar just recently, thought "Oh no you don't.. stay on that shelf!".... Even after all these years I'm still tired of it!
