Scents Memories

I just lit a BBW Lilac scented candle, and I was immediately transported to my childhood. When I was a kid, we had a lilac bush in our front yard. When it would bloom in summer, my mother would trim large branches off it, and put them in a large glass vase in the middle of the dining room table. As soon as I lit this candle, I was 10 years old, it was July, and my friends and I are running into the house in our bathing suits to get a freeze pop or glass of cherry Kool-Aid on a break from either swimming in the pool or riding our bikes around the neighborhood. Who knows where the time goes? Do you have any scents that take you back to a certain time or remind you of a particular person?

When I smell Chloe perfume, I am instantly carried back to when my husband and I were dating.

Every once in a while, especially when I'm stressed, I crawl into bed, pull up the sheets and it smells just like my Grandmas sheets used to when I was a kid. Her sheets were always fresh smelling and they smelled of her too. Grandma was such a comfort to me when I was a child and even into my teenage years. I guess Grandma comes around whenever she knows I'm stressed.

@TenderMercies Good post! Lilacs have become my favorite over the years For my scents moments it's two things: apple pie baking in the oven and the scent of viburnum carlesii. Apple pie for obvious reasons - holidays, family time, sunday evening supper. Viburnum because it was just outside the kitchen window, the scent would float through the open windows and fill the kitchen with such a sweet smell in the spring!

Lilacs and Lillies-of-the-valley grew by our farmhouse and I love those scents. When Avon sold perfumes with those scents, I bought them.

@AuntG Lillies of the Valley! Yes! My Mom never bought perfurme, but I think she actually bought this. We had 100 year old Lillies of the Valley passed down from my Grandmother.

Lily of the valley and lady slippers. The lady slippers had a faint fragrance. They were so delicate. Was told that they were an endangered species. Once in a while I would pick one and hide it in the basket on my bike.

@Catiele I think Lady Slippers are in the orchid family. I remember looking for them in my grandfather's woods.

Recently I was cleaning the horse water troughs with clorox and suddenly remembered the tall, blond intern who showed up for our date to the little theater after washing his white vw van with clorox. I could smell him coming about ten feet away from my door. People stared at us all evening. He was such a sweet guy. I actually sat laughing in the pasrure at the memory attached to clorox.

My mom always used Super Estee. After she passed I kept it and will open it once in a while when I really start missing her.

For me it is definitely lilacs. Can't get enough of that scent. Wish I could grow them here in Southern California. I tried, years ago, but had no luck.

I specifically buy original scent of Jergen's lotion. I remember my mom buying me a small bottle of it when shopping with her. I probably was 4 years old. I love the smell of it!

Just like you, Lilac brings me back to childhood in the back yard. Bayberry reminds me of my mother and her traditional candle. Sawdust and Petrol remind me of summer vacations in Vermont. My Uncle was a conrtactor and there was always timber in the big barn and he had his own gas pump. Funny how that combo jogs the memory as a gateway to horses, cows and ATVs.

I have to agree about the scent of lilacs transporting you back in time! We had a lilac bush growing up and I too, remember my mother picking lilacs and putting them in a big periwinkle blue stoneware vase. They would sit atop the television set and the whole room smelled of beautiful lilacs! How I wish I had gotten that vase after she had passed many years ago!

The scents that remind me most of my dear grandmother are all food related, I think because she was such a wonderful cook and so enjoyed hosting holidays and Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren. To this day, when I make her stuffed cabbage (halupke) recipe, I close my eyes and swear I am in grandma's kitchen!

@lOVETOSHOP I make my grandmother’s halupke to this day, too, as well as her fried cabbage and noodles!

@TenderMercies - aren't you happy you have these treasured recipes? I can't imagine not having my grandmother's recipes to make...it's a wonderful tradition to pass on to ongoing generations! And enjoying the food she made all throughout my childhood and into my adult years keeps her close to heart!

@lOVETOSHOP Oh yes, I am so happy to have her recipes, and I use them often. I think about her every day.
