Extended Warranties

I am doing a kitchen remodel in a couple of weeks

and have picked out my new appliances. Do you

ladies get extended warranties on all your appliances?

I am of two minds about this. One part of me says take your chances and the other part realizes that everything is made not to last. I don't like having

to anticipate repairs before I even get them.

There are manufacturers warranties on all appliances - usually 1 year. If u bought appliances from Costco, they give u 2 years. If u bought from a major big-box store like Lowes, it depends on the cost of the warranties. I bought a washing machine & dryer a few years ago from Lowes (purchased a couple of years apart). I paid around $99 for an additional 3-yr warranty on each - so I bought it. I did have to call once to repair the dryer.

If it's around $100/yr for each - I'd say NO.

If u bought from a small store, I wouldn't buy the warranties.

Most of the time, you shouldn't have any problems with the appliances.

In 1995 I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator from Circuit City, Thousand Oaks, CA. The salesman was so pushy about me getting the warranty, I agreed to it. Then, I went home and called the store to cancel the warranty. I should have moved on to a different salesman. 23 yrs later, I never had a problem with the refrigerator. A few years later, the company went out of business!!!!

They make more money on the warranties - than the products - that's why they try to scare u into buying them.

When I bought my fridge and stove, I bought the warranties. I had minor issues with each that were fixed free of charge. If it isn't the cost of a mortgage payment, I'd buy it. Do a little checking on service charges. Is there a charge to just show up, then fixing gets added on top?

I buy extended warrrenties only for some appliances. I have used it several times on refrigerators and especially dishwashers...really, really with dishwashers. In 2017 alone, my dishwasher needed two different type of pumps and a new motherboard...all covered by a warranty. Those two appliances seem to always have problems

I have never purchased an extended warranty on stoves, washers/ dryers and never really had a need to do so.

The only one I have ever bought is for my heat pump. They are an expensive "appliance"........around $8,000.

Depends on appliance. When we bought ours for our new build we got it on everything except the microwave. It’s like a $3800 refrigerator so worth it.

When I got a washer/dryer from Lowes I bought the extended warranties-3 more years.

I never had to use them.

When at Lowes for other things, a salesman told me that if you don't use your extended warranty from Lowes, you can get 30% of your money back!

Well I did and did get a Lowes gift card for the 30%. Good to know.

I wouldn't get a warranty again because I realized that most appliances are good those first 3-4 years and if there is a problem they are probably defective and it seems they would have a problem in that first year (usually under warranty by the manufacturer).

On the other hand, I guess we always take our chances. I always think, watch if I don't get the warranty, then I'll wish I had etc.

@Carmie-

How long had you had your dishwasher when you needed the repairs? And also, how many years was your warranty?

One thing I heard re refrigerators is the ice makers tend to cause a lot of problems-leaks, etc.

We never fall for the line of charging me $$ for an extended warranty. The manufacturers themselves usually give a sizable warranty. I always thought it was such a scam.

@Hellcat64 If this were 25 or 30 years ago, I'd say NO.... HOWEVER, with the way appliances and things in general are made today, I would (uncharactaristically) say YES. See if the company from which you purchased the appliances, will throw them in at NC. Mine did when I purchased my frig and dishwasher.

You may have had to have done that when initially discussing the purchase, but it's worth a try.

No, I don't. I've bought new appliances in the past few years and the manufacturer has sent me solicitations repeatedly to try and sign me up, but no.

We buy them and they're sometimes worth it. However 3-yr warranties at Lowes are really only 2-yr warranties. You get the first year from the manufacturer included in the price of the appliance.

It all depends on what the appliance is, sometimes I get them. Appliances don't last like they used to, I'm told 7 years is the life span of a appliance now. I watch for a good sale when I do buy an appliance and I try to decide how much I'll spend on a certain appliance and I won't go over that amount, due to the fact that they don't make them to last. A friend of mine bought a zub zero refrigerator and paid $10,000 for it and it last 10 years, so whether's it's a really expensive upgraded appliance or not, they don't seem to make them to last, so if you want that high end appliance, understand that. I was pricing dishwashers when my last one went and everyone says Bosch is the best and it's quiet but I didn't want to spend that much money, I got a really nice Fridgeadare dishwasher for $500 and it's as quiet as can be and cleans my dishes just fine. I didn't buy the extended warranty.

I've heard that you shouldn't buy extended warranties. That it's just a way for them to make extra money and not worth it in the long run. Whether it's true or not, I don't know. We don't buy them. I know in my experiences, if a problem does occur it's always AFTER the warranty expires.

P.S. I do buy extended warranties when buying a new car though.

Hi @FranandZoe-

Actually, my 3 year extended warranty was 3 years in addition to the first year by the manufacturer.

So it is 4 years warrantied.

I got my washer/dryer 4 years ago and the warranties (manufactureer and Lowes extended 3 year) just ended 4 years after buying it.

No, I wouldn't waste the money on extended warranties. I'd rather wait and take the chance as most issues will occur when the warranty has expired! Waste of money IMO.

It's just a money maker for the company.

Our Samsung refrigerator ice maker wenf out right after the one year warranty was up. Good thing my dad got them to replace the ice maker because they had a recall on that model and has lots of problems. But we had no extended warranty and it would of cost a fortune to fix.

If you pay with a credit card, additional warranties are sometimes included. Call your credit card issuer and ask or check their benefits on line, also price match is a seldom used benefit.

I don't buy extended warranties on anything anymore. It's too costly. Nothing is made to last anymore and when I compared the cost of the extended warrenty with the cost of a new "whatever or the repair" it just didn't seem to be a savings to me. I have also noticed that some extended warranties have quite a fw exceptions in them as to what is covered and what is not. I really dislike the hassel ignoring the fact that you are without the use of the appliance or whatever.

Depends upon price of warranty vs price of the item. usually I buy the warranties on cell phones & computers - have used them more than once.
