Does anyone miss...

Does anyone miss Fenton art glass? I wish they'd make new pieces. My grandmother had a few pieces in her kitchen, and my mother bought me some pieces when I was younger. It wasn't Lalique, but it didn't have a Lalique price tag. It was American and nostalgic. I also miss the ruby and cobalt Mary Gregory glass pieces.

Missing them YES, but in my case WHAT TO DO WITH THEM? I am in the decluttering stage of my life and what I have my daughters do not appreciate or want. In conversation with one of them the others day I lamented about having to clean out and her comment was "mom there is always a trash can."

I think some home styles cycle just like apparel styles cycle. Home styles have cycled back to rustic, industrial, mid-century modern, etc. I'm waiting for the American art glass to come back...lol.

Every "senior" I speak with says the same thing--their kids don't want any of their "things". We saved so many items for our kids for when they had their own places--by the time they moved they didn't want most of it and we donated items. The kids don't want "collectibles" (which I do not have), sets of dishes, small appliances, decor, etc.

I'm not big into "stuff" that just sits around and collects dust, but I do have a few small pieces of Fenton Burmese that I love and plan to keep with me until someone else has to find a place for them. I particularly love the little Christmas tree, the snowman and several others. I have a piece of furniture in the MBR that needs a few pieces like these to fill in small nooks, so they are perfect. I do miss the shows and the vendors - very interesting people.

I have many of the cats. They are the same pose, just different glass. Now, what do I do with them? They sit around and gather dust. At first it was inexpensive at about $20.00 each. But after Bill stopped coming on QVC the price doubled. Not as interesting to collect anymore. Bil showed film of pieces being made and the artists all had names. Once he was gone, it was all sell, sell. Now I'm in the same spot as most people my age. No one wants the "stuff" anymore. I inherited several sets of china. I sold one set, got lucky on that one, gave away a couple sets, and the rest were donated to charities. No one want them. You have to wash them by hand, and they can't be used in a microwave. Everything has lost it's "value", and the younger generation just have no use for it. I miss seeing the guy from Boyd's Bears, too, but no one would buy them. And Marie got out of the doll business when they lost value. Hummel's were always more expensive than you could get back out of them. And doesn't everyone have at least a couple beanies laying around? And Precious Moments were hot there for awhile, now you can't give them away either. Stuff. I'm at the declutter age, and the kids don't want to start. Collecting is over for now. Maybe in another generation.

Love Fenton glass. Have my Moms. I especially like the black glass. Collectiableshave no big value. Bought a Cherished Teddy yester day for $1.99.

I believe Fenton either closed or was sold or something. Anyway I don't think it's still around or if it is , not the same.

Someone (shopperqvc) mentioned Beanies. OMG I have a HUGE number of adorable cute Beanie Babies. I didn't buy them thinking of making money at some point, I just kept buying them for their cuteness. No clue what to do with them or who to give them to. They are in bags in an old cedar chest. I could probably get someone to take that old cedar chest before anybody would want to take the beanies.

No, I'm not into that type of thing and I don't believe that the Fenton glass that Qvc sold was the same Fenton glass that my grandmother collected.

Much of Fenton was not 'collectibles' or decorative pieces, but functional pieces. I still have a number of those that belonged to my mother and great aunt. Beautiful cake pedestal with matching candles holders make a beautiful centerpiece on the table and functional for serving desserts.

I have salt and pepper shakers, cream and sugar, and toothpick holder that match all these that make a nice service as well. I don't use them much, but they are nice and neutral and set a pretty table.

I still have a number of Fenton lamps as well. They aren't everyone's style as they are rather Victorian in nature, but I have several rooms that they are just stunning in.

And I do miss Fenton, as we used to travel to the Factory several times a year. It was a beautiful drive and they had a wonderful store there too, with so many pretty things, and from other companies too.

I do mourn the loss of yet another American company and art form dying out. We should all be sad when that happens, regardless if we liked or bought the products, as it is another loss for our economy and our heritage. Those pieces were handmade and required skilled craftsmen.

QVC introduced me to Blenko glass

Had no idea the company existed but since then, I've found pieces in antique stores and consignment shops.

Not really a "collector" but I love any kind of quality, hand made glass. I appreciate the American craftsmanship.

It would be nice if QVC would do this more often. I'm sure some of these small, old companies would love the exposure. Instead of more over-priced cakes.

@bonnielu That was harsh, lol. My DD is interested in everything I have, but what to do with it if I go before she has her own home. I tell her to sell what she doesn't want on ebay or have a Christmas boutique sale here for the tons of that I have.

I have only one son, and many many things that I enjoy and use. I have been on a quest to downsize and declutter, but my view on things is that I don't keep trash or broken things, or masses of paperwork. Everything I do have, is clean organized and usable.

Should I pass anytime soon, my son and husband will simply have to have an auction or pack up and donate what they don't want. I don't feel bad about them having to deal with it, as they have way more 'stuff' (and I really mean junk) that I will have to deal with if they would go first.

I always imagine that there will be a group of people more than happy to come to an auction here, find such nice quality things in such good condition (I know as I have been going to auctions all my adult life, and they can be quite fun), and make them part of their homes and traditions or make good money reselling them on ebay.

I know my son is interested in a number of things I have, especially those handed down through the generations, and I really won't be offended when he doesn't take things, as I know with my own mother, we discuss how much of her stuff I won't be keeping when she is gone. There is too much and a great deal of it has no meaning to me.

I only expect my own child to feel the same about my things too.

I loved watching the shows, but didn't buy much.

I do have two black hobnail "witch shoes." Not sure they were marketed as such, but that's what they reminded me of.

Fenton and Benko did beautiful items, but, as others have mentioned, what to do with them -- even the functional pieces after a time, don't get used. I don't entertain much anymore, so things stay in storage. I'm trying to get rid of things every year!

Nevertheless, the shows were entertaining and provided a lot of enjoyment. Lots better than watching endless computers and vacuums!
