I have white plantation shutters on three sides of the house and silhouette shades on the lake side so we can enjoy the views. I hated the price of the shutters, and the shades too for that matter, but I would do it all over again. I have no curtains on the main floor of my house and I love it that way. Clean simple lines and great light control. LM

We got them about five years ago. Didn't know they were for old people. Ours open from the bottom or you can pull them down from the top. I have them open in the daytime and closed at night. I don't have a problem controlling the light. We let it all in.

This is what almost all the homes where I live have on their sliders. Most of the homes have venitian blinds on the windows but some of us have plantation shutters.

It seems that curtains are coming back in style from what I see in the decor magazines and on HGTV. Unfortunately, curtains are not a good choice here in Fl. as they are damaged very quickly by the extreme sun.

I have cellular shades in my kitchen, dining room and kitchen...my whole first floor has them. They are made by Hunter Douglas and were expensive. I have a vertical one on my patio door too. Almost everyone who sees the one on my patio door wants one, but when they hear the price, they change their mind.

It seems like all the younger folks are outfitting their homes with 2 inch Venetian blinds. Remember those from your childhood?

Well, they are now new and fresh. They do look nice, but are not easy to keep clean. I have them in two of my bathrooms in a faux wood that is moisture resistant. They are always dusty and are high maintance to keep clean...my house is always dusty

i like my cellular shades. They are top down, bottom up shades. I open them 100% during the day time to let all of the light in and close them completely at night for 100% privacy.

They are easy to clean, I just vacuum and spot clean if necessary. I have taken down the shade above my kitchen sink twice and washed it in the bathtub with a little dish soap. I rinsed it and let it dry. It looks like brand new. My blinds are about nine years old.

I would buy them again....in a heartbeat. And if I ever move, I will take my patio blind with me. It would be taken down and stored before the House was on the market...I love it that much.

@Abrowneyegirl The cost of plantation shutters is very variable. Size of windows - what style you buy - open from side or center , divided top & bottom or one continuous - and the material you buy - they come in various woods and plastics. Also - painted or not.We chose divided top & bottom so we can close the bottom for privacy but have the top open for light. We wanted bright white that would not yellow in the Fl. sun so we were advised to get a resin material that is what they make football helmets from. They certainly do seem durable, and have not yellowed in almost 8 years. For 6 windows - 2 sets of double and then 2 single, all about 6 ft high, plus the honeycomb cellular shade for the slider we paid $3400. My DH was upset at me for spending this much but now that we have them we know we wouldn't want to go back to curtains, shades or blinds. Shutters are more appropriate for controling the Florida sun.

You get what you pay for.

you also need to consider the weather and light coming through your windows. I like plantation shutters, but they are not the best for PA Windows.

When we had our camper up in Pa. it had cellular shades and I truely hated them.We had a 3 window bay floor to ceiling on the west side where there were no shade trees and in the afternoons it was very hot in that area. Those blinds did nothing to prevent that hot afternoon sun coming in. Eventually we purchased some of those paper and insulation shades for your car windshield and cut them to fit that window. We adhered them to the window with painter's tape and then closed the blinds so you couldn't see them from inside. What a huge difference having something there to insulate made. Unfortunately this solution to the problem wasn't very attractive from the outside.
