Tablecloth or not ??

Do you put a tablecloth on either your kitchen table or dinning table? I dont put one our formal dinning table, cause it's glass , but i do put one on our kitchen table . I like a really good quality white tablecloth especially when it's set. which I usually keep it set for the different seasons or holidays. Right now it is all set for Christmas.

What at do you do ?

Reminds me of my Nana, she always put a plastic tablecloth on her kitchen table. I never put a tablecloth on my kitchen table, never even considered it. When I had a formal diningroom, I used a tablecloth when I set the table for dinner. On a daily basis, I just had a big Capodimonte centepiece in the middle of the table. Now, we have smaller dining area off the livingroom and I like to keep really beautiful placemats on it and a centerpiece. I do use a tablecloth for formal or holiday dinners.

That's so funny I remember my mom and grandmother putting that plastic over the tablecloth to keep everything clean LOL

When the dining table is not in use, it does not have a tablecloth on it. The breakfast room table may or may not have a cloth depending on my whim at the moment. It has a glass top so it doesn't need a cloth, but sometimes I like the added color and pattern that a tablecloth brings to the room as I don't have other fabrics in that room.

I go back and forth. My table is an old one from Ireland. I mean......old. It used to sit in a brewery and well.....it's old, lol. And we love it. The wood is gorgeous and I hate covering it up because I love the look and feel of old wood furniture. That said, I want to protect it especially when kids or projects are going on (though it's been through worse, I'm sure).

For formal dinners/holiday dinners, I use a tablecloth. For projects/mess stuff, I use a tablecloth. For everyday dinners, I use those cork placemats.

Not much help, I know, lol.

@Kitty Galore We have a formal dining room and a small table in the kitchen that only has room for two chairs. DH and I eat there most of the time but when we have any guest we have to eat in the DR.

I usually keep placemats on the kitchen table with only an occasional tablecloth. In the DR I sometimes use a tablecloth just for a change of color, other times I leave the table bare with a centerpiece. When we use it I put out placemats. For holidays or special dinners I will use a tablecloth. So, I guess I just do what I feel like for each occasion. I love a nice white tablecloth with crystal and the good silverware though.

I can't set my DR table just for Christmas decorating as we have several dinners coming before the holiday and have to use the table. So I will do something different for each time we have dinner guest.

On another note, I finally received all of the Magnolia pieces and am using that theme right now. Are you using yours? Will you be posting pictures?

My dining room table is very ornate so I just use holiday placemats, cloth napkins with holiday napkin rings and a Christmas centerpiece. My kitch table I usually have other seasonal placemats but this year I found a red tablecloth with white faux fur all along the edge!! It is so fun!!

@lucymo Hi ! Are you talking about the Homes & Garden dishes? I'm not familiar with the Magnolia pieces, maybe your thinking about someone else? I have the 12 days of Christmas Home & Garden set and do have that on our kitchen table right now with the cake platter that matches , and ornament tree on top of that with 12 days of Christmas ornaments on it from Pier 1 I purchased last year. 12 days is kind of my theme this year 😀😺

We have a newer kitchen table, so for now I keep a cute plaid tablecloth on it. I love the wood, but my husband and grandkids are rough on EVERYTHING!

@Kitty Galore... We have a formal dining room and the table is always covered with a seasonal tablecloth. In fact, I changed out the table today with my Christmas dinnerware and Christmas decor. Right now there is a red tablecloth covered by a white lace cloth. I will add Santas (from my collection) later as part of the table's decor. It's very pretty.

We have an eat in kitchen and that table (for four) is also covered with a tablecloth. Sometimes I add placemats on top of the tablecloth; other times it's just the tablecloth. I also have a wooden lazy Susan in the center of the kitchen table that holds salt and pepper, sugar, napkins, etc. I do not like a bare table.

I have many tablecloths but I also love the wood on both the breakfast and dining tables. So it just depends on my mood when I'm decorating or just setting the table for dinner. I also have many sets of table runners and placemats for when I want to show off the wood.

I don't see the point in having a pretty glass tabletop if you're just going to cover it up all the time.

I really wanted to see the beautiful wood of my dining room table but my DH is always tossing stuff like keys on it and I knew it would be ruined. Finally I had a custom piece of glass made to fit it. Now I can see the wood , and the glass is all scratched up.I guess after 35 years I should just get a new piece of glass made.

@Kitty Galore I'm sorry, should have explained what I was referring to. I ordered the silk Magnolia pieces, garland, wreath, teardrops, picks and napkin rings from Valerie. I was thinking that you got those too. Maybe it was someone else, I live in a state of confusion most of the time.

Our home is causal and I like a holiday table cloth on my kitchen table in my summer kitchen, but the rest of the year the table is bare. Upstairs in the great room, I just have a small Tavern table that seats 4 and I only put a table cloth on it if we have company for a meal.

We have only one dining table in our home, in the dining room, as the kitchen is too small to have any table. We eat every meal every day at it.

I have done covered and uncoverd at different times, but for the last 10 years or so, I have always used my custom made table pads, covered by an elegant but very functional table cloth.

I just like the look of the room better with that cloth on, it looks more finished.

The cloth is by Heritage Lace the style is Heirloom

My Grandmothers always had clear plastic over the beautiful white lace tablecloths in their dining rooms. At Christmas we had the plastic Christmas tablecloth with poinsettias on it.

We are Sicilian and we have tomato sauce at every meal, so plastic is the way to go. The men also took off their dress shirts and ties and ate in their undershirts. LOL
