I have wool area rugs all over my house and they are easy to spot clean or use a rug cleaning machine on. I've had dogs and now a cat who vomits at least once a month on my rugs and no stains. My hard wood floors are 37 years old and have a patina, but other wise look like new. If I would not have covered the floors with area rugs, I have a feeling they would be a mess from my pets.

I have area rugs as most of my first floor is HW floors and it is hard for the dogs (slipping and sliding) so we use area rugs.

The SMALLEST area rug is 9 x12 and in reality the cleaning -deep cleaning, high traffic areas is a pain.

Having them removed, professionally cleaned and returned is VERY expensive.

Does anyone have any practical solutions.

Honestly my plan at this point is to buy less expensive rugs or deeply discounted rugs and just replace on a regular basis.

I have always had dogs and area rugs. I use a rug cleaning machine by Bissel and sometimes I take them out in the backyard, use a water solution with a little dishwashing liquid and then hose them off. I then hang them over the porch railing and they are dry within a couple of hours. I have other friends who have successfully done the same but it isn't something I would do with a really expensive rug--your call!

Wool rugs do not hold dirt or stains like synthic fibers, nor do spills absorb into wool. They are easy to maintain with a vacuum and, if necessary, a clean wet cloth. I have mine cleaned only upon occasion (seems like it's been 8-10 years) and they do it on my garage floor! Takes a couple of days to dry. They return to lay the rugs in my LR, family room and library. I have smaller wool rugs in all three bathrooms which I'm able to have cleaned on a yearly basis at a reasonable charge. An additional bonus: they are so soft and warm underfoot!

Isn't that just the price we pay for having pets? I wouldn't buy cheap rugs because they won't last and they won't look good. Just like you buy pet food and pay vet bills; you have to factor into your budget the cost of having your rugs professionally cleaned once or twice a year and cleaning them yourself in between. I can sympathize, we have wall to wall carpet and when we had our beloved cat; we had to pay to have the carpets cleaned 3 times a year. It was expensive. In the old house, a 9 room house with hard wood floors; there was the expense of the area rugs upstairs and downstair but with a dog and a cat; we didn't exactly have a choice. This is the longest I've ever been without a pet and I will be honest, when I start thinking that it would be nice to have another cat or even a small dog....I do think about the carpet situation.

In our previous home we had area rugs - the largest was 8ft round. We also had large dogs.Once a year I had them taken up and professionally cleaned. It was much less expensive than having to get wall to wall steam cleaned. While the rugs were away from home I would wax and polish the floors.

If you have the outside space to dry them in nice weather, I'd invest in a Bissell and clean them yourself.

The investment in the machine will be less than the cost of one cleaning of the whole house full of rugs.

You can do it whenever you need or want, and in the warm weather, they should dry by the end of the day.

You will also be able to spot clean spills, accidents, usually without picking the rug up, as a Bissell used properly doesn't soak the carpet.

And you can use the machine to clean your upholstery on a regular basis, as well as your car seats and carpets.

My Bissell is one of the best investments I've ever made.

I have hardwood floors throughout my home. My rugs are just throw rugs that I periodically just throw in my washer and dryer. Boom! Good as new again. I wouldn't buy a rug unless I can wash it.

I think when you have pets the best option is to not spend thousands of dollars on an area rug. I do have one very expensive run in my dining room, but the rest of my area rugs were considerably less expensive. The fact of the matter is, whenever one of the beasties is preparing to barf, they head for an area rug...

I use our carpet shampoo-er on the area rugs we have,

you need another person to hold it down.

If you do it quickly there should be no damage to the wood floor
